Backstaged: The Devil in Metal

A time machine through the origins of metal music, its connection to darkness and decadence, the lifestyle of many of its followers and how its upped the ante on the phrase "sex, drugs and rock n’ roll." It might be the colossal doom of Black Sabbath, the cutting precision of Judas Priest and Iron Maiden or the graphic lyrics of Slayer, metal is The Devil’s Music. Some fans have fallen under its seductive spell, turning them into rebellious beasts. Bestselling author and music journalist Jon Wiederhorn is your host with insightful and sometimes outrageous interviews with musicians from over 30 years. Take a trip through the tropes of metal and examine — and sometimes celebrate — what makes metal so lasting. Hear from members of Black Sabbath, Metallica, Pantera, Slayer, Anthrax, Motley Crue and many more as we hunt down the devil within and discover why it’s okay, and even necessary, to keep metal alive. Titanic Reaction with Tony Mengis

"I was born and raised in Portland, Oregon, one of the best underground music scenes in the world. I got into the underground metal scene in the early eighties and found punk a few years later. Sometimes for better, sometimes for worse, punk has been one of the biggest influences of my life ever since. I've been in a few bands and toured every chance I got. I've been a booker at a few clubs and even owned a couple. With my background, I was excited to see my niece and nephew get into punk. I was also a little worried, but they are smarter than me so have avoided making the same mistakes. It made me wonder what, after almost 50 years, still attracts people to the subculture. Also, what keeps people involved into their 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and beyond. Charlie Harper is in his 70’s and has been touring since 1976. I’ll be talking to bands from around the world, and also people who keep punk alive behind the scenes. I’ll be asking them what attracted them to punk in the first place and what keeps them around for decades. I’m looking forward to the conversations, because sometimes I can't even answer it for myself. Beware, there will be a lot of talk about Portland. I moved to Amsterdam a few years ago and miss Portland every day, so I love to hear stories about it. Also, as much as I hate some things about it, it is one of the best cities on earth. Also beware, these are real stories- well, most of them are. They will contain tales of alcohol, drugs, sex and extreme violence and language that Mary Whitehouse would not approve of. Take caution and thank you listening, I appreciate each and every one of you." Written and Hosted by Tony Mengis Produced & Edited by Chelsea Clyde Mixed and Mastered by Joe Mengis Read More
