The Curious History of Your Home

Join domestic historian Ruth Goodman as she guides you through the surprising, often epic, stories behind everyday objects in your home. Double-glazed windows? We owe those to a French king’s odd fascination with oranges. The minty fresh toothpaste by your sink? Well, if you lived in Ancient Greece, you’d be washing your teeth with ground-up bones and oyster shells. And wallpaper? It seems innocent enough, but in the Victorian era it was downright deadly. Discover the extraordinary history of the ordinary items all around you, every Tuesday, wherever you get your podcasts. The Belgrano Diary

The sinking of the General Belgrano was the bloodiest and most controversial military action of the Falklands War. This is the story of government cover-ups and conspiracies; of whistleblowers, crusading politicians and journalists fighting for the story. And caught in the middle of it all, a young officer whose account of what happened contradicted Margaret Thatcher’s in every crucial detail.

The Wrong Walk Home

In the small town of Lexington, SC, secrets, lies and racism came together to take away a young Black man’s freedom and ultimately, his life. Willie Leaphart, 17, was walking home from church one night on Jan. 26, 1890, when he was arrested and accused of attacking a white woman at one of Lexington’s finest homes. Despite being a teenager, Willie must have known that a Black man facing a charge like that in the Jim Crow South faced almost certain death.  The attorney George Graham, reluctantly appointed by the court to defend Willie, uncovered facts that undercut the accusations of Willie’s guilt and suggested a darker reason for why he was accused of the crime in the first place and why he couldn’t be allowed to make it out of Lexington’s jail, where he was lynched by a mob of 100 men. For 130 years, the crime was forgotten. But when the evidence is rediscovered in 2021 in the course of River Bluff High School research project about lynching in the county, it creates a chance for Willie’s name to finally be cleared. But can South Carolina in the 21st century correct a 19th century injustice? Will the reason for his death finally come to the forefront? Read More

Landslide – NPR

In the mid-1970s, the Republican Party looked on the verge of self-destruction. Until 1976. A political earthquake: A cutthroat, razor-close, deeply personal battle for the Republican nomination, and the party's identity. It resurrected the GOP, remade it as a conservative party, and pulled the country sharply to the right. Landslide is the story of the closest presidential primary race in American history, what followed, and how it reshaped the political parties — opening the partisan rifts that divide us today. Hosted by award-winning public radio journalist Ben Bradford. Read More

European Intellectual History since Nietzsche

Ideas matter. They cross borders; they are cosmopolitan by their nature. Intellectual history is a history of intertwining conversations, a history of posing questions not easily—or ever—answered. HIST 271 is a survey of modern European intellectual history, sketching a narrative arc from the late 18th century transition to modernity through the late 20th century transition to post-modernity. (Modernity is largely about replacing God. Postmodernity begins when we give up on replacing God.) With Marci Shore, Associate Professor of History. Read More

World Herstory

Welcome to World Herstory where we discover the incredible lives and legacies of lesser-known women in history. Throughout time and across the globe, there have been countless women who have changed the world through their fierce determination and indomitable spirit, yet are often overlooked or ignored. That’s where we come in.

In each episode, we’ll explore the stories of specific women who challenged societal norms, broke barriers, and made a lasting impact on the world. From ancient times to modern history, we’ll dive into the lives of these women whose remarkable contributions have been buried by the sands of time. They come from all corners of the world and represent a wide range of backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. We’ll discuss the obstacles they overcame, shining a light on their power, resiliency, and sheer badassery.

But World Herstory isn’t just about telling the stories of individual women. We’ll also dispute the roles of women in history and the impact they’ve made on society as a whole; examine the ways in which women have been marginalized and oppressed; celebrate the progress that has been made, and acknowledge the work that still needs to be done. We’ll provide historical context and offer insight into the broader cultural, political, and social forces at play during the time periods we explore.

And while we’ll focus primarily on women, we’ll also review the intersections of gender, race, class, and sexuality that have shaped the experiences of women throughout history.

Whether you’re a history buff, or simply interested in the untold stories of extraordinary women, subscribe to World Herstory and join the movement to give these women the recognition they deserve.
