CAPTURED: Shot Down In Vietnam

During the Vietnam War, hundreds of American aviators were shot down, imprisoned, and tortured, experiencing the harshest conditions imaginable. For as many as eight long years, the prisoners of war (POWs) stayed true to their mission and survived behind bars. They communicated through codes and raps on prison walls. They were incredibly brave and resisted enemy propaganda. Their families knew little of their fate. 50 years ago, the US government saved 591 of those POWs from North Vietnamese captivity. Now, hear their personal and intimate stories like never before, from the dramatic moment of being shot down to the tearful family reunion. CAPTURED features newly re-surfaced recordings from Presidents Richard Nixon and Lyndon B Johnson's oval offices. Broadcast veteran Tyler Russell McCusker conducts original interviews with 85-year-old Commander Everett Alvarez Jr., the first American shot down, 91-year-old Captain Eugene "Red" McDaniel, POW families, authors, and historians. Put yourself into the action with hundreds of historically-accurate sound effects and scene-setting original music compositions that create an immersive, enthralling soundscape. This new podcast from the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Foundation is a compelling and powerful exploration of the human cost of war and the resilience of the American spirit. Read More

Shoe Leather

Shoe Leather is an investigative podcast that goes behind the scenes of forgotten stories that shaped New York City. Go along with the team as they knock on doors and track down the people who were at the center of the news. This season we are looking at the aftermath of the killing of Amadou Diallo, an unarmed Black man who was shot by four white NYPD officers in the Bronx on February 4, 1999. They fired 41 bullets at Amadou while he stood in the doorway where he lived. Nineteen hit him. The first likely killed him. Amadou’s killing resulted in one of the biggest trials in New York’s history and changes in the NYPD. It led to the conviction of a Bronx serial rapist who had been on the loose for six years. And it inspired art and music. Read More

Mission History

Mission History will travel through world history to bring you stories of legendary military leaders, epic campaigns, and secret missions that remained hidden for years: from Alexander the Great to Xerxes to Ghengis Khan; from Julius Caesar to William Wallace to Geronimo; from the Trojan War to the Viking raids to the American Revolution, and beyond. In season one, we begin with a story of timely importance. It’s the story of the armies who fought in the American Revolutionary War… because in 2022 the Camden Battlefields' caretakers were forced to make a rare and difficult decision. They needed to safeguard the resting places of those valiant soldiers whose very graves were in jeopardy of being destroyed. Hear from the men and women who rescued the remains of the fallen heroes and experience the historic event in April 2023 of the reburial ceremonies. But before that, Mission History will transport you to America in the 1770s and 80s through vivid stories of top generals, fearless battlefield commanders, and the valiant men and women who stood on the front lines. From the cities of Boston, New York, and Philadelphia to the fields and swamps of the Carolinas and Georgia, experience the American Revolutionary War like never before. ~~~ Mission History is a collaboration of Black Barrel Media and QCODE. The presenting sponsor of Season 1 is the Historic Camden Foundation. Badass of the Week

Throughout the course of human civilization certain individuals have stood out as being completely f***ing awesome. From ninjas and gunfighters to pirates and Vikings, to explorers, scientists and great leaders, these people - true badasses - completely obliterated anything that stood in their path, routinely overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles, and ultimately altered the course of history through their actions. Be it glory, conquest, or survival, these hardcore men and women all had one specific goal in life - and they didn’t let anything stand between themselves and their mission. They refused to back down even when the odds seemed hopelessly stacked against them, they came back from the brink of failure to achieve ultimate success, and they beat the fucking hell out of anyone stupid enough to have stood in their way. Badass of the Week is a weekly (duh) podcast, that dives into new stories of badasses every week. Read More

Building the Impossible Dream: The History of Zionism

75 years after its founding, the establishment of the State of Israel remains one of the most remarkable achievements of the modern era. Never before had a people dispersed throughout the world, deprived of sovereignty for millennia, at times targeted and slaughtered, returned to its ancient homeland to build a thriving country. Who were the great leaders and thinkers that helped craft a modern Jewish nationalism? What moved them to build a new Jewish state for a people so long deprived of self-determination? How did the political situation of the Jewish people—in Russia, Europe, and the Middle East—change and evolve, and how did the Zionist founders and the new Israeli patriots interact with world leaders and confront their enemies, both on the battlefield and in the political arena? In this limited-series podcast, released in time for Israel's 75th birthday, historian Dr. Daniel Polisar weaves together the political, cultural, and religious history of the Zionist movement, illuminating the spirit of modern Jewish nationalism and the unfolding (and miraculous) meaning of modern Israel. Bob Crawford of The Avett Brothers explores the post-presidential legacy of America’s sixth president: John Quincy Adams.
