Ghost in the Machine

“I truly believe that motors were used to win bike races” - Greg LeMond, three-time winner of the Tour de France.

In January 2016, 19-year-old Belgian cyclist Femke van den Driessche was caught with a collection of wires, motors and batteries buried deep inside her spare bike at the Cyclo-cross World Championships.

She was then suspended for six years and bore the wrath of global media as the only rider ever to be banned by The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) for having a motor in her bike, despite numerous previous suspicions of other competitive cyclists that have never been confirmed or disproved.

Eight years later, Chris Marshall-Bell is on a mission to reveal the truth around motors in cycling as he peers beneath the surface of sports' most incredible discovery.

Chris will unpick a tangled web of bizarre misdemeanours, claims and counter-claims. From jail time, bankruptcy and death threats to carnival cat costumes and one daring canary theft - this story is set to keep listeners on the edge of their seat.

Is motor-doping being performed at the highest level? Is this bigger than just one young woman's spare bicycle?

The Takeover

The largest school district in Texas lost its elected leaders in the summer of 2023. In their place – a state-appointed board along with a leader unafraid of creating upheaval and massive changes.

It's unusual for school districts to lose local control, especially on a scale this large. Suddenly, the Houston Independent School District with its nearly 180,000 students and 11,000 teachers didn't know what would happen next. But the reforms came quickly.

What led to the takeover and what's the impact of this whole-scale, test-based reform? We go back decades to understand how a history of high-stakes testing got us here. That pressure to perform trickles down to campus leaders and teachers, to students and their parents. The stakes mount as the takeover plays out and no school is left untouched.

The Takeover is a seasonal podcast about power and public education. The first season captures 18 months of on-the-ground, neighborhood-level reporting, enterprising investigative work, and deep context about education policy and history from a range of expert researchers.

After listening to the episodes, you can reach us at takeover@houstonpublicmedia.org, fill out a survey about what you like and don’t like at this link, or leave a voicemail for us at (713) 743-6712.

Blood is Thicker: The Farris Wheel

When the charred remains of prominent commercial real estate attorney Gary Farris were discovered on a burn pile with a bullet lodged in a rib bone, detectives knew they were facing a homicide investigation. The crime scene was a sprawling 10-acre property in Cherokee County, Georgia, where Gary Farris lived with his wife, Melody, and their son, Scott. Gary Farris seemed to be a loving husband and father, affectionately called “Big Daddy”. Yet, all signs seemed to suggest that one of Gary Farris’ own family members was responsible for his murder. It turns out this family had a lot of secrets – involving money and infidelity. Much like an actual Ferris wheel, the blame game went round and round. Join 48 Hours correspondent Peter Van Sant for “Blood is Thicker: The Farris Wheel,” a six-episode podcast that unravels a tangled family saga.  Read More

Answers for Claudia

15 years ago Claudia Lawrence went missing. Multiple men have been arrested then released. Several lakes near her home were emptied in the search for her body. Claudia has never been found.

Now, her 80 year old mother Joan Lawrence has asked the journalist Tom McDermott for help, saying this might be her last chance for answers. Tom has spent the past year immersed in Claudia’s friendship group, speaking to people in Malton and Heworth where Claudia and her family lived. But something isn’t right, and even now people are frightened.

Tom looks for answers by speaking to the people who knew Claudia best, exploring the persistent rumours surrounding the case and asking why, 15 years after Claudia’s disappearance, are people still scared of the truth?
