Mr 80 Percent

Host Mark Shanahan shares a deeply personal, sometimes harrowing, often funny, always true story about prostate cancer, a disease that affects him and millions of other men. I Will Read for You: The Voice and Writings of Jaiya John

Voice medicine to soothe your soul, from freedom worker, poet, author, and spoken word artist Dr. Jaiya John. Bedtime bliss. Morning meditation. Daytime peace. Comfort. Calm. Soul food. Come, gather around the fire. Let me read for you... Books online wherever books hang out. Learn more at jaiyajohn.com.
.
Sacred Conversations are periodic episodes of my podcast in which I reach out to people whose work and life inspire me, and we simply have a soulful conversation. Prerecorded for video and available on my YouTube channel. No scripted, transactional, extractive, one-sided interview dynamic. Just two people with a care and curiosity for each other’s journey and creative work, asking each other about what stirs in us, and enjoying the ancient, mutually healing art of listening deeply. Again, not an interview. A spiritual communion. The idea is for us to relax and enjoy an organic conversation, like over tea or breaking bread, and to get to know each other along the way.

Trojan Wars

The scramble to meet the energy demands of AI and data centers is leading to what some are calling a "Nuclear Renaissance," and the Pacific Northwest is at the heart of it. Oregon and Washington are the sites of the world’s first full-scale nuclear power plant (Hanford), the world’s then largest pressurized-water nuclear reactor (Trojan Nuclear Power Plant), the only company with regulatory approval to build small modular reactors (NuScale), and a growing number of power-hungry data centers — and yet Oregon has a constitutional amendment banning new nuclear projects. Why? It all comes back to the region's history with nuclear, and the legacy of the environmental movement in the Northwest.

"Trojan Wars," from OPB and 30 Minutes West, tells the story of how our grand plans for cheap, reliable, carbon-free power in the 20th century ended up in a heap of concrete and barrels of nuclear waste on the banks of the Columbia River. And we ask: What went wrong the first time around? And is it possible to get it right this time?
