If you asked him, Calgary MP Jasraj Singh Hallan would tell you he isn’t sure he was “born to serve.” What Jas would say is he knew the moment the trajectory of his life changed. As a new Canadian, it wasn’t enough just to be in the land of the maple leaf, he wanted to make a difference. First as a community leader and businessman, then as a family man, and now as an elected Member of Parliament for Calgary Forest Lawn, who also serves as the Shadow Minister of Immigration. Jas is also Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration working to improve people’s experiences with IRCC. As an Albertan he is also listening to people’s perspectives on the oil and gas industry and clean energy, as well as agricultural experiences. A proud member of the CPC caucus, All That Jas is a podcast about immigration issues, energy issues, agriculture, and most importantly about people from all walks of life.

Feed Drop: Jasraj’s Take on Canada’s Surge in Crime Feb 16, 2024

This a special Feed Drop episode of The Blueprint podcast hosted by Jamie Schmale, a member of Parliament for Halliburton Kawartha Lakes, Brock. Jasraj is the guest discussing the rise in auto theft in Canada, particularly in Toronto where it has increased by 300% since 2015.
Jas attributes this rise to the Liberal government's soft-on-crime bail policies, such as Bill C 75 and Bill C5, which allow repeat offenders to continue committing crimes. He also argues these policies have made Canada a haven for criminals and have contributed to an increase in violent crime and money laundering.
The remedy, the proposed Conservative plan to tackle the issue, which includes hiring more CBSA officers, improving scanning of vehicles, and cracking down on bail reform.

Stop the Taxes Eh! Feb 21, 2023

Three things are weighing heavily on Canadians: the rising cost of living, never-ending deficits, and the federal government just keeps printing money (last year alone it printed $300B – right out of thin air).

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) has been sounding the alarm that all of this is creating unmanageable pressure on all of us.

The Government solution appears to be more taxes and higher taxes – carbon taxes, alcohol taxes… and how does a Finance Minister go $20B over budget?

Do Canada’s Military Veterans Deserve Help? Or Assistance in Dying? Jan 10, 2023

The controversy surrounding Canadian Military veterans and even paralympic athletes being offering medical assistance in dying (MAID) continues to grow. The Government says an RCMP investigation has been launched and Liberal plans to expand the MAID program to cover mental illness have been postponed.

Mark Meincke is a Canadian veteran. He’s open about his struggles with PTSD and even a suicide attempt in the last couple years. It seems “Ghoulish” to him what the Canadian Government seems to be doing. The MAID suggestions are coming from multiple caseworkers in Veteran’s Affairs from multiple offices across the Country.

Why does Canada’s Government seem to want to kill Canada’s veterans rather than help them?

Today, natural gas meets 38 per cent of Canada’s energy needs and remains the country’s most affordable and dependable energy resource.

When natural gas and carbon taxes go up, the Canadian Gas Association and its member utilities, who pass consumers the final bill for their gas use, are the first to hear about it and to work with consumers to educate and mitigate bill increases for their 7.5 million customers in Canada.

Part of that rise in prices is due to rise in demand post COVID. But there’s also more economic activity around the world and conflict in Ukraine.

And another big part of the rise in your gas bill is due to rising carbon taxes.

In this episode Jas talks with the President & CEO of the CGA Tim Egan to get his thoughts on commodity prices, rising carbon taxes, and missed opportunities to provide the world with much-needed Canadian energy.

Pop Go the Carbon Taxes Oct 18, 2022

This is a special episode co-hosted with Jamie Schmale of the podcast The Blueprint, and an Ontario MP.

In this episode Jas and Jamie share the mic with their colleague Richard Bragdon, an MP in New Brunswick.

The three, Jas from the west, Jamie in central Canada and Richard in the east share their thoughts on the Liberal plan to begin hiking carbon taxes in 2023. Some estimates say the average Albertan will be paying $2,300 more next year in energy costs. The average Ontarian $1,500 more. And 40% of Atlantic Canada is likely to struggle this winter just to pay heating costs.

Canada’s 988 Suicide Prevention Hotline – Todd Doherty’s Story Sep 20, 2022

When it comes to at-risk youth Todd Doherty knows what he’s talk about. He was one. Grew up in Williams Lake, BC. Mental and physical abuse were the norm at home. Changing schools was also the norm – more than 20 of them before high school.

This is part of the reason Doherty introduced a motion in the last Parliament for an easy-to-remember 3-digit suicide prevention hotline in Canada (988). It passed unanimously.

The need is acute. In Canada, 11 people die by suicide and another 275 attempt suicide – every day!

All About the Calgary Centre for Newcomers Sep 06, 2022

The Calgary Centre for Newcomers sees over 40,000 people every year.

While excited describes all, many will also face difficult hurdles in the weeks and months to come. Language barriers, skills and qualifications they’ve worked hard for that suddenly don’t apply in Canada. It can even be difficult to get job interviews with language barriers. Many parents worry their kids will lose their culture and many kids quickly become frustrated that their parents don’t understand them or their new friends.

The Centre for Newcomers helps with settlement services, jobs and careers, youth and family, and language instruction.

Voices for Families in Canada’s Immigration System Jul 05, 2022

Laura Silver and Vishal Ghai know the frustrations (and mental anguish) of Canada’s Immigration System first-hand. Laura has been caught in a spousal sponsorship quagmire since 2018 as she tries to bring her husband to Canada from Cuba. Meantime her stepson, Tito, has been sending video messages to Canada’s Minister of Immigration via Facebook for months. Since 2018 Laura's husband has been denied a visitor visa six times.
Vishal Ghai became involved in advocacy for Immigrants after his own frustrating experience with “The System.”
Both Laura and Vishal know what so many prospective immigrants to this country have experienced – they’ve made the phone calls, written the emails to the Minister and other MPs, send communication to Senators… and the final straw of reaching out to media. Both are now part of an effort called Voices For Families advocating for those left behind, or worse, victims of discrimination for no reason.

Phil Gurski should know. He spent three decades as a strategic intelligence analyst at both CSIS (the Canadian Security Intelligence Service) and the Canadian Security Establishment – Canada’s signals intelligence agency.

Guest Phil Gurski
30 years + as a strategic intelligence analyst specializing in radicalization, and homegrown Islamist extremism. Phil worked as a senior strategic analyst at CSIS (Canadian Security Intelligence Service) from 2001-2015, specializing in violent Islamist-inspired homegrown terrorism and radicalization. From 1983 to 2001 he was employed as a senior multilingual analyst at Communications Security Establishment (CSE – Canada’s signals intelligence agency), specializing in the Middle East. He also served as senior special advisor in the National Security Directorate at Public Safety Canada from 2013, focusing on community outreach and training on radicalization to violence, until his retirement from the civil service in May 2015, and as consultant for the Ontario Provincial Police’s Anti-Terrorism Section (PATS) from May to October 2015.

He was the Director of Security and Intelligence at the SecDev Group from June 2018 to July 2019. Mr. Gurski has presented on violent Islamist-inspired and other forms of terrorism and radicalization across Canada and around the world.

Tina Petrow – From the Farm to Airdrie Jun 07, 2022

Tina Petrow hadn’t even heard of Airdrie until she moved there. If she was going to live there, she had to get involved so she started volunteering. And that’s when the love affair with community began.

She’s now a second term City Councilor and real advocate for health care, infrastructure, and social well-being in the community she calls home just north of Calgary.

There are No Subsidies in Canada’s Oil and Gas Sector!! May 24, 2022

As an MP Greg McLean has a big portfolio. He’s the MP for Calgary-Centre but also the Shadow Minister for Natural Resources. That includes mining, forestry, and pipelines.

In that position he often wonders, why can’t Canada get mining, pipeline, and exploration projects approved? Particularly when we can do so environmentally and efficiently. And is the World starting to see this?

System Flaws and Their Impacts to Families May 10, 2022

When Napoléon met his Waterloo, it was his life’s defeat – when Gideon Christian met his Waterloo, he found his life’s destiny.

Canada was only supposed to be a pit stop on his journey to the United States from his country of birth in Nigeria. But Christian was so impressed by Waterloo, ON, and the land of the Maple Leaf, he chose to stay and eventually began the process to sponsor his wife to join him in what would be their new country.

That’s when the nightmare started.

Christian had all the approvals from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada – he had that email saying his wife was approved. So, he flew back to Nigeria to help her move. That’s when they were told that email… was sent in error! He should go home, and she should stay home.

There are longstanding experiences and accusations of system racism and bias in Canada’s Immigration System.

Is it true the triage system for Indian applicants is more strict than the triage system for Chinese applicants?

Canada’s Immigration System is truly a mystery not readily explained. What we do know is what has been gleaned from Access to Information Requests. Canadian Immigration Lawyer Steven Meurrens makes those requests constantly and knows as well (or better) than anyone how it works and how it doesn’t.

Be The Change YYC Mar 01, 2022

Chaz Smith has spent a lifetime wandering the streets of Calgary. It began in childhood as a heartbreaking, all too familiar, story. Family trauma, nowhere to go, sleeping in parkades, eventually falling into hard substance use and mental health issues.

But Chaz chose life, not only for himself, but has dedicated his life to helping others in the same situation. He launched a volunteer, not-for-profit organization called Be The Change YYC to help end homelessness. Today Chaz is part of a group on the streets that helps save lives.

Jasraj wanted to see this organization’s work first-hand, so he walked with Chaz seeing people who desperately need help, people with so much potential, and now they’re receiving it.

But COVID has been harsh. If you think it’s hard being quarantined at home so long – imagine not having any home to go to.

And the need for affordable housing is acute.

How to Address Canada’s Immigration Backlog Feb 15, 2022

The backlog of Immigration applications to Canada is stunning… 1.8 million and counting. If those were one-page applications and you stacked them on top of one another they would reach a height of 700 feet. To put that in perspective, that’s taller than the Calgary Tower.

It hasn’t always been this way – it doesn’t need to be this way now. A revolving door of Immigration Ministers over the last five years doesn’t help.

Raj Sharma is one of Canada’s leading Immigration lawyers. In this episode he joins Jasraj to talk about that Immigration backlog and says it’s time to DO better, not just promise it.
