A character and studio previously relegated to tech demos for Sony were finally given the reins to their own full game and they completely knocked it out of the park. Matt wasn't a Genesis kid, but even Hunter knew very little about this game. Well guess what: it's incredible and I love it and I want everyone to try it and fall in love with piloting this zippy little ship. This is a game about navigation, movement, resource management, and action! It's got EVERYTHING. And sure it's hard...but it's FAIR and that's all that matters. I cannot explain why this game works for me, okay? It just does.

Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth Demo Feb 13, 2024

It's a new year and time to come up with an entirely new focus for the show. We've approached a lot of old eras or consoles over the past couple of years but something we've enjoyed doing and want to do more of is investing time in reading old journalism about the era we're discussing. It's week two of our Starcraft extravaganza and we continue with our adventure through the single player of the game, this week getting to move on to the first and only official expansion, Brood War. It's three more full campaigns with the featured factions of Starcraft, but the story has a lot more twists and turns to throw our way. We also talk about what units were added in this expansion and a bit about how that changed the landscape of the game.

Jason interviewed dozens if not hundreds of game developers on the front lines to put together two books about the trial and tribulations of the games industry. Blood, Sweat, and Pixels (2017) takes a close look, one chapter at a time, at the development history of numerous specific games including Shovel Knight, Stardew Valley, Destiny, and the infamous Star Wars 1313 covering how hard it is just to get games made. Press Reset (2021) narrows that focus by covering numerous studio closures and the over-reaching arms of publishers and executives; following games like Kingdoms of Amalur, Bioshock: Infinite, and Epic Micky.

Citizen Sleeper (2022) [w/ Aaron Donogh] Jul 11, 2023

This week was supposed to be a Quake 3: Arena episode for the 90's PC game series, but as it turns out all 90's multiplayer FPS games are nigh unplayable. Sure, you can boot up Quake 3, but there is no discernible way to recreate the allure of what this game meant in it's hay-day and it felt like robbery to shortchange you on it. But, a commonly requested game on the OGA Discord has been last year's Citizen Sleeper: a narrative focused game about robots, space ships, family, capitalism, and what it means to Be. It's a beautifully told story that wastes no time. And it was a great excuse to finally get Aaron Donogh on the show, so I'm calling it an improvement in every way!

Descent (1995) May 09, 2023

One of the challenges of this season is getting old PC games to run on modern hardware. It's interesting that as emulation has improved, it seems our ability to play some old PC games has fallen by the wayside. But today's game was a surprise. Not only does it run well on modern devices, but it is perhaps the best it has ever been on the most modern of devices, the Steam Deck. Let's talk about how this old game can possibly feel wholly new again!

Grim Fandango (1998) [feat. Tim Schafer] [w/ Ezra Fox] May 02, 2023

It's high time we returned to the wonderful world of LucasArts and classic PC adventure games. Grim Fandango marked both the ending of an era while also ushering in 3D graphics for the genre. But it's too hard for us to unpack the weight of this game without consulting some of the people who were there. First, friend of the show Ezra Fox is here to share his experience growing up with this game and spending a lot of time with his dad, David Fox, at LucasArts. And Ezra was kind enough to call in industry legend and Grim Fandango writer and director Tim Schafer to join us for a quick chat and a chance for the two of them to stroll down memory lane.

Another World (1991) Apr 25, 2023

This is one of the earliest games we'll be exploring in our 90's PC season, and yet Another World is perhaps the most timeless and important game we have to discuss. It is a game that in many ways feels like a modern indie gem made by one person, but instead it's an early 90's indie gem made by one person. It is also one of the most commonly cited inspirations for game designers, and yet it's a game that is still criminally under-talked about. Command & Conquer (1995) Apr 11, 2023

Back into the 90s PC project and this week is our first dip into the RTS genre, that's the one we called the definitive PC gaming genre. We've had a number of strategy games we've wanted to play over the course of the show, and the first proper RTS on our list is Command & Conquer. In many ways, it was a major leap forward, but it is trapped in a genre that did a lot of evolving beyond it. Can we ever forgive it for being old?

Crystalis (1990) Apr 04, 2023

It's our first Off-Topic episode of our 90s PC Game season, as well as our first game from the Every Wheel of this season. Whitebush has generously suggested to us Crystalis for the NES, and I think they're on to something! This is an action RPG that feels like Zelda meets Dragon Quest with a delightful little story and a wonderful use of color and art. It's such a good NES game, Matt even liked it!

We have finally arrived at our final game of 2001: A Game Odyssey and we're going out with a bang. Ico gave one of Sony's most legendary development studios its name and provided Fumito Ueda with a massive boost to his budding career in the game industry. Depending on who you ask Ico is either the overshadowed little brother of Shadow of Colossus, or the cliché video game hipster opportunity to say "I liked it before they were cool." Either way, it's a legendary game with aspects of its design found in many games that have followed it.

Snatcher (1995) Jan 24, 2023

Don't mind the weird American release date on this episode title. This game is 1988 through and through. This is Kojima's adventure game, cyberpunk masterpiece Snatcher and it's been referenced about a million times in every Kojima work since it's release. It's also an interesting peak into a world of more complicated adventure games and hopefully serves as a potential bridge to those older games. Or it would if Konami had any interest in making it accessible to a modern audience.

One more hiatus week before we return on topic to 2001: A Game Odyssey and this week we much go backwards to go forwards. (Which is also backwards) Matt is on the hunt for a 16-bit racing game that he actually likes and today's choice is Nintendo SNES launch title F-Zero. It's a strange game that hasn't had a new entry in many years and at this point feels like a forgotten relic. What's even more forgotten is how this game felt on SNES since the developers went in a vastly new direction for its 3D sequels. But how does F-Zero fit in with the other racing games of this era?

2001: A Game Odyssey marches onward and this week we hit up a less remembered character platformer, Klonoa! Namco brought us this earnest story in an attempt to put more heart in its writing while also providing a nostalgic feeling, slow-paced puzzle platformer. Matt is smitten, and Hunter likes it just fine. No need to get all contrarian about it! It's a good game!

A single player puzzle platformer with an esoteric multiplayer hook: you are randomly partnered with someone online and you cannot speak to them. Today is the splendid arcade classic from Arkansas' own Dona Bailey! Centipede by Atari has such an original look and feel that it easily stands out from so many games at the arcades of old. Good arcades are hard to find these days, but if you can find this cabinet in good condition, it's absolutely worth the time!

There are a lot of genres this show has yet to tap and it's honestly a crime that it took us this long to do a stealth game. But boy, we're gonna go ahead and come out strong with IO Interactive's 2016 revival of the Hitman series, the kick off of the World of Assassination trilogy that you can acquire ALL of now as part of a Hitman 3 super collection. But today we aren't talking about all of that extra stuff. JUST Hitman 1.

Katamari Damacy (2004) Mar 01, 2022

It's been all peaks and valleys this last month over here on OGA, and we round it off with top billing: Katamari Damacy. This is a deeply original game that checks every box. Level Design, atmosphere, humor, music. It's all rolled up in there and the mass is quickly breaking beyond the scope of the list. This game is the barometer by which we establish friendships, folks.

It's our first venture into a proper fighting game and we lead with a tragic story from Matt's past. It's the genesis of Matt's anger towards video games and the game that turned him off of fighting games. Will nostalgia redeem this derivative classic?

Forza Horizon 5 (2021) Feb 15, 2022

CARS. We're big gear heads over here, just like our dads and their dad's before them. Love them cars. Or at least I love it when I have near infinite cars available to me via Wheel of Fortune style prizes and when driving those cars around recklessly awards me a limitless amount of points. Car games rule and this is an especially good one. I just wish it was more like a dad that wanted me to learn about cars.

Jet Set Radio (2000) Feb 08, 2022

Video games are finally cool. We now live in a time where everyone knows graffiti is art, but in 2000, society was still up in the air. The jury is still out on whether roller blading is cool, but I contend that this is just another way Jet Set Radio is well ahead of the curve. This game is cool, cops are rubes, and SEGA is the best video game company. No further questions.

Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) Jan 18, 2022

Sega was doing just fine as a company, but a bunch of executives met in a board room one day and said "Gimme one of them Marios." The mascot race was on, and their answer was...a blue hedgehog that runs very fast. It's hard to understand how anything gets made, but this is definitely up there on the list. Solar Ash is the follow-up from developer Heart Machine, and while it shares a lot of the same colors, so much of the game is very different. It's a mixed bag of style and tone and it's time to decide if Matt has a new second favorite game.

We here in the new year and we have a reignited resentment for this list and how to play this game. That's because we're tasked with ranking Final Fantasy 7 and we cannot imagine a more undesirable job. This game has been talked about to death and is regarded by many as one of the best games of all time...but Matt doesn't understand JRPGs because he's a basically a wet noodle. Halo 3 (2007) Dec 07, 2021

Another series in the bag! Well, at least one arc of the Halo franchise. There's plenty more Halo games to eventually cover, but we finished the fight and it's time to evaluate how this trilogy stands up to THE LIST. This is the most polarizing of the Halo games, with a multiplayer we adore but a single player we loathe. What can all of that mean for it's inevitable ranking??
