We learn about two organizations that are preserving the Northwest’s green spaces for public enjoyment. Then we'll hear from a group of farmers that are using their agricultural resources to fight hunger in Oregon. First we will speak to Ted Gilbert and Jocelyn Gaudi of Gateway Green, Portland’s newest park. Next we'll get a short report from producer Barb Seaman on Cape Horn Conservancy. This group of volunteers is dedicated to preserving, enhancing and promoting the Cape Horn Trail, one of the best hiking routes in the Columbia River Gorge. Finally we will speak with John Burt, the executive director of Farmers Ending Hunger, an organization that aims to increase access to high quality food among hungry local communities through a partnership between farmers, food processors and the Oregon Food Bank.

This show features two farms that are teaching children hands on lessons about environmental science and agriculture. First we’ll hear from Cayla Catino and Adam McKinley from Geercrest Farm & Historical Society. The farm has passed down through five generations of the Geer family, a prominent family in Oregon’s state history. Today, the farm serves as a non-profit that immerses children in agrarian life and aims to build leadership skills through meaningful work. Next we will hear from Elizabeth Schmitz, the executive director of the Sauvie Island Center. Her organization works to help children understand the connection between the food they eat, farming, and the land. Their hands-on, farm-based curriculum was developed through a partnership between farmers, educators and culinary professionals.

We bring you conversations with two organizations that help underserved youth in the Portland area. Joy Church, the executive director of Portland Kitchen, will tell us about how her non-profit uses food as a tool to build life skills with youth in a fun and creative setting. We will also speak with Heather Jeffries and Timothy Travis from Kinship House, a group that provides outpatient mental health services to foster and adopted children as well as their families.

First we speak with Terrence Philip of Skate Like a Girl, a non-profit that provides skateboarding clinics for girls of all ages. Next we hear from Brian Mayo of the American Lung Association (ALA). He'll tell us about Reach the Beach, a unique bike-ride fundraiser to support ALA programs. Finally, a short radio documentary from producer Barb Seaman about the Cascade Pickleball League, a fun competition that helps raise money for the Cascade Middle School library.

First we speak to Scott Brown, the president and founder of Surg+Restore. His organization works to finance and train Sierra Leonean medics to maintain a sustainable reconstructive plastic surgery and burn center in Makeni, Sierra Leone. Next we hear from Erin Ellis, Brianna Ellingson and Sunyi Kim of the Sexual Assault Resource Center (SARC). Founded in 1977 by two sexual assault survivors, SARC provides education, support and advocacy to those affected by sexual violence 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Next we learn about Golden, a new app that connects volunteers to meaningful work and allows non-profits to easily manage their volunteer activities.

Since early in 2015 we've had the pleasure of hearing the insights and interviews of the Nonprofit Hour's co-host Julie Falk but we are sad to say that, due to the demands of her numerous other commitments in our community, she has informed us that she will no longer be able to continue with our show. On today's show we're going to be hearing about a couple of organizations that steer slightly away from our traditional sense of what a non-profit is. In the second half of the program Phil Busse speaks with two members, Megan McGeorge and Evan 'Rabble' Henshaw Plath, of the organization Awesome Portland which is not officially a nonprofit but instead a group of trustees that comes together every other month to evaluate proposals from artists, musicians, environmentalists, social justice activists, technoligists and all manner of Portland dreamers who have ideas about how to make the place we live even better. They hold a live event party where applicants make the pitch for their idea and at the end of the night award the grant winner a thousand dollars cash to make their dream a reality. First up though we'll listen in on a conversation Phil had with the current Executive Director of Portland Community Media. This nonprofit has a unique funding model based on the federal mandate that cable television providers deliver content that serves their local community and is responsible for operating the numerous community access stations we have in Portland and the content they provide. PCM's Justen Harn tells us about his background prior to coming to his current post and how that impacted his experience, the history and goals of Portland Community Media and plans for how they hope to leverage emerging media technologies to bring the organization into the future.

In this Nonprofit Hour show we'll be hearing about a couple of nonprofits that are long established ones in the Portland area who are doing tremendously important work for people in vulnerable populations and doing it in a way that maintains their clients dignity and self worth. In the first half of the show Phil Busse spoke at our latest live recording event with Elise Downing of Sisters of the Road - a homeless support and advocacy group that has been operating in our city since 1979. It's been such a long standing foundation in our community that there's even a song written about them which we'll hear about during their interview. In the second half of the show we will learn about Rosehaven an organization that is approaching 20 years of serving women and children experiencing the trauma of abuse, loss of home and other disruptive life challenges. We were joined in our studio by their Executive Director, Rebekah Albert to took us through the history of Rosehaven and painted a picture of the experiences their guests have faced and how they created a safe, respectful community with support and services to assist the women and children in regaining stability in their lives.

Also at the last live show we were joined by Arran Robertson of Oregon Wild. He spoke with Phil Busse about the humble beginnings of the organization, how he came to develop a passion for protecting wild areas and the work that Oregon Wild has done to preserve natural streams, lakes, land and air which has been so vital to the protection of wildlife habitats such as for that of the famous wolf OR7. In this Nonprofit Hour show we'll be continuing in our series of conversations with candidates currently running for Portland city offices by hearing a conversation that Phil Busse had with mayoral candidate Sarah Iannarone. She speaks about her experience as a business owner and virtual ambassador for the city of Portland through her work at PSU with international visitors who come here to learn from our cities model of growth. In the second half of the show we'll speak with Scott Brown and Ed Zancanella from Surge/Restore who are also in the Afro-Latin Blues band Ojos Feos which is having a benefit show on Saturday, May 7th to raise funds for their organization which is training skilled doctors in the African nation of Sierra Leone which, through decades of war and disease has been coping with severely outdated surgical procedures and medical institiutions. To start, hear Julie Falk speak with Glen Montgomery and Felicita Monteblanco of Vision Action Network. VAN was formed in 2002 as a private non-profit agency to be a catalyst, incubator, and facilitator for resulting collaborative efforts to improve life for people throughout Washington County. Montgomery and Monteblanco join us today to discuss VAN's past, present, and future and explain the vital importance of fostering collaborations and maintaining a holistic view in addressing the needs of the diverse Washington County communities. In the next half of The Non-Profit Hour, we have another segment in our ongoing series of interviews of candidates who are running for office in our Government of Portland, looking at the ways in which government and non-profits must collaborate to achieve positive outcomes for all residents. Phil Busse talks with Multnomah County Commissioner and Portland Mayoral candidate Jules Bailey. In this episode we'll hear from the February 28th live show where Phil Busse interviewed current city council candidate and founder of Reading Frenzy on Mississippi Avenue, Chloe Eudaly. They spoke about her background in activism, the reasons why she is currently running for a seat on Portland's council and the ways in which nonprofits and government interact to strive to make our city a better place to live for all. In the second half of the show Phil speaks with Mac Prichard of Prichard Communications, a Portland company that provides communications to social changemakers across the country to help make the world a better place. They have supported numerous nonprofits over the years and Mac Pritchard explains to us why, especially for nonprofits it is vital to have a strategic plan for communications and marketing to reach their organizational goals.

NPHS4E06: PDX Gay Mens' Chorus and PFLAG-Portland Black Chapter Mar 28, 2016

In this episode we'll hear interviews and musical performances from our February 28th live show at the Waypost. Phil spoke to the Artistic Direcor of the Portland Gay Men's Chorus, Bob Mensel about the history of the organization, their work in building common bonds within as well as beyond the LGBT community and to bring people the entertainment, joy and togetherness of choral performances. We also spoke to Portland musician Dave Fleschner about his work with the Men's Chorus over the years and specifically about their upcoming live show at Reed College titled The Blues: Backwoods to Broadway and the inspiration behind some of it's songs. At the Waypost a sizeable number of performers from the Chorus treated us to live performances of a few of these songs. We also heard from Khalil Edwards, co-director, and Olivia Olivia, communications specialist, of the PFLAG Portland Black Chapter about several programs that support LGBT youth of color as well as a discussion about the unique experiences of LGBT persons from, for instance, the african american, latino or asian perspectives.

Two groups supporting kids' arts and music education. First up is Joshua Davis of Michigan nonprofit On Stage 4 Kids and 2015 finalist for The Voice talking about the importance of music in childrens' development, the influence of a visit to the Palestinian West Bank on his lastest album and his personal connection between music performance and social activism. In the second half we speak with Adam Goodwin of Ethos about their 20 year history of teaching the value of music and outreach to communities both urban and rural. In the nonprofit news we hear from Mary Peveto of Neighbors for Clean Air about recent and ongoing concerns about air quality in Southeast and other Portland neighborhoods and legislative action in the state capitol.

NPH S4E01: Clark County Historical Museum - One November Morning & NW Dance Project Jan 11, 2016

On this weeks show we'll be learning about two organizations that are long time cultural institutions in the Portland metropolitan area. In the second half of the show Phil Busse will be speaking to Scott Lewis, executive director of the Northwest dance project, which has been creating innovative and provocative contemporary dance performances in Portland for the last 11 years and passes on its legacy to future generations through its dance education programs. But first Phil speaks to Roben White and Katie Anderson, Executive Director of the Clark County Historical Museum about an upcoming exhibit that they have opening in February called One November Morning. The exhibit features emotionally compelling pieces created by Native American artists in representation of the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864 where more than 150 Cheyenne and Arapaho people were massacred in Colorado. Artists represented at the exhibit are descendants of the victims at Sand Creek and their work focuses on the remembrance, honor and strength of their ancestors and leaders.
