Scouts Honor Sep 28, 2020

TALES OF VALOR HALF-HISTORY: Jake Ryker | Boy Scout Jake Ryker is the hero who responded proactively to stop the Thurston High School Shooting. On May 21, 1998, 17 year old Jake was a student at Thurston High School in Springfield, Oregon. On that fateful day, Jake was sitting in the cafeteria when another student walked into the building and started shooting. Jake’s instinctive response was to be proactive rather than passive. Despite being shot and wounded by the attacker, Jake led the effort to subdue the gunman and held him until law enforcement arrived. Jake was able to initiate taking back control while under attack.

Let's Get Into the Fight. Sep 18, 2020

TALES OF VALOR EP. 51: Master Sergeant Thomas Patrick Payne | On his 14th deployment, Pat was part of a team assigned to plan and conduct an operation to rescue over 70 Kurdish prisoners being held by ISIS barbarians in Iraq. The team soon received horrifying intelligence that the terrorists were planning to massacre their captives and bury them in freshly dug graves. Pat and his teammates raced into action.

After midnight, on October 22, Pat boarded a helicopter and departed on a mission to free the hostages from two buildings guarded by dozens of ruthless and bloodthirsty ISIS terrorists. He was in command of a team clearing one of the compounds. As soon as the ramp to his helicopter went down, Pat rushed into a blistering hail of gunfire. Pat and his team swiftly overpowered the enemy, secured the building, and freed 38 of the hostages.

Then Pat received word that the rest of the assault team was facing harsh resistance in another complex. Pat turned to one of his fellow soldiers and said, “Let’s get into the fight right now. Let’s get into the fight.”

Heroism In The Sky Aug 31, 2020

TALES OF VALOR HALF-HISTORY: Ralph Cheli | In circumstances that Air Force Magazine once described as "Triumph and Tragedy" Pilot Ralph Cheli was leading a group of B-25 Mitchells on a low level attack of Japanese airfields on 8/18/43 when his bomber was severely damaged while he was ensuring the safety of others in his squadron. He became a prisoner of war and was ultimately executed by his captors. Cheli was awarded the Medal of Honor in October of 1943. Listen in as we honor this hero and his tale of valor.

Ultimately finding his new home to be a prisoner of war camp Stalag Luft 1. Vernon Baker's Fighting Spirit Aug 18, 2020

TALES OF VALOR HALF-HISTORY: Vernon J. Baker | From Baker's Medal of Honor citation: "Lieutenant Baker's fighting spirit and daring leadership were an inspiration to his men and exemplify the highest traditions of the military service."

That fighting spirit transcended the battlefield and into life as a black man in the military during WW2. Baker ultimately received his medal and recognition in 1997, some 53 years after his valor in combat.

Her War Never Stopped Aug 03, 2020

TALES OF VALOR HALF-HISTORY: Freddie Oversteegen | From an article in the Guardian: Her mother, Trijn, a communist bringing up her children independently in the Dutch city of Haarlem, sheltered Jews, dissidents and gay people as they fled Germany in the 1930s. Oversteegen, who was seven when Adolf Hitler came to power, bunked in with her big sister Truus to make room.

It was the start of a struggle that would last until she died on 5 September, the day before her 93rd birthday, in a nursing home not far from where, as teenagers, she and Truus carried out a campaign of assassinations and sabotage against Nazi invaders with pistols hidden in their bicycle baskets.

“If you ask me, the war only ended two weeks ago,” her son Remi Dekker told the Observer. “In her mind it was still going on, and on, and on. It didn’t stop, even until the last day.”

It was during a fierce attack on his squad that he showed his steadfast courage, facing the enemy while protecting his fellow soldiers under dire circumtances. As a prisoner of war his MOH was awarded as "top secret." Listen in to an amazing tale of valor.

TALES OF VALOR HALF-HISTORY: Daylan McLee | On Father's Day 2020 in Uniontown, PA Daylan McLee snapped into action to pull Officer Hanley from a burning vehicle following a car crash. This is the kind of thing that happens more often than the main stream narrative wants us to think.

Deming's Medal of Honor citation from WW1 indicates that despite several and severe wounds, he stayed in the fight and was "the last to leave" as forces were falling back from an advanced position. A simple and direct story today for your dose of half-history!

Dudley Wrangel Clarke knowing exactly what he wanted in his Commandos: “We looked for the dash of the Elizabethan pirate, the Chicago gangster, and the Frontier tribesman.” This young group needed to be self-motivated and willing to move forward no matter what. What we learn today is that some no-matter what's definitely came their way.

Henry Johnson the Harlem Hellfighter Jun 29, 2020

TALES OF VALOR HALF-HISTORY: Henry Johnson | Thankfully President Barack Obama finally awarded William Henry Johnson (commonly known as just Henry) the Medal of Honor in 2015. To say that it was a long time coming would be a massive understatement. Henry Johnson was a real life Rambo who fought off a German raid in hand to hand combat in 1918 in the Argonne Forest in France.

While race was an issue in 1918 America, the sentiment from the French differed. Johnson was awarded the Croix de Guerre with star and bronze palm by the French, despite the color of his skin and wa sth first U.S. Soldier in WW1 to receive such an honor.

Johnson died, poor and in obscurity, in 1929. From 1919 on, Henry Johnson's story has been part of wider consideration of treatment of African Americans in the Great War. His story deserves to be told and remembered!

Serving in key battles of Ypres, Somme (the bloodbath), and Passchendaele, Peggy is a national hero and a hero to his tribe. Find out why how he's become known as the ghost in the trenches.

TALES OF VALOR HALF-HISTORY: Osowiec Fortress | On August 6, 1915, as usual Poland became a hotbed area of battles between the Russian Empire and Germany. When the Germans decided to unleash poisonous gas on the enemy to try and take the fortress they'd been attempting to get for 11 months, the Russians didn't go down without a fight that saved the fortress for another future fight. The Russian "attack of the dead" is the stuff of zombie scenes, as you'll soon hear!

TALES OF VALOR HALF-HISTORY: Alwyn Cashe | Alwyn “Al” Cashe told his family that he would never leave one of his soldiers behind in combat.

“I told him, ‘Don’t go over there playing a hero. You learn how to duck and come home,”’ his sister, Kasinal Cashe White of Lake Butler told the Orlando Sentinel on Saturday. “He said, ‘I’m doing the job I was trained to do. I have to take care of my boys.”’ After his Bradley Fighting Vehicle caught fire from a roadside bomb Cashe made good on that commitment when he saved 6 soldiers and an interpreter in 3 trips back to the BFV.

Cashe succumbed to the burn injuries he sustained during his rescue. Those who surrounded him at his passing say that he never stopped asking about his soldiers. We honor you on this episode sir and we hope to see you on top of the hill.

While there are many words that can and should be said to honor him, Mike had a letter written by Stephen back in 2015 that he called "An Open Letter to My Killer" that demonstrated the warrior mindset he maintained for 23 years as an officer and is a way we hope to demonstrate he's worthy of a Tale of Valor.

TALES OF VALOR HALF-HISTORY: Marvin Shields | Marvin Glenn Shields was the first was the first and only Navy Seabee to be awarded the Medal of Honor and the first sailor to receive the MOH for heroism above and beyond the call of duty in the Vietnam War.

From his citation:

"Although wounded when the compound of Detachment A-342, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), 1st Special Forces, came under intense fire from an estimated reinforced Viet Cong regiment employing machine gun, heavy weapons and small arms, Shields continued to resupply his fellow Americans with needed ammunition and to return the enemy fire for a period of approximately three hours, at which time the Viet Cong launched a massive attack at close range with flame throwers, hand grenades and small-arms fire. Wounded a second time during this attack, Shields nevertheless assisted in carrying a more critically wounded man to safety, and then resumed firing at the enemy for four more hours."

TALES OF VALOR HALF-HISTORY: Daniel Inouye | Serving in the Rome-Arno campaign in 1944, Daniel Inouye and a historic segregated all-Nisei 442nd Regimental Combat Team served with absolute distinction. Daniel Inouye embodied valor amidst great personal sacrifice to his body in service to the men under his command and the greater purposes he saw in the conflict. As his injuries saw him getting carried away to spare his life, his order to the men was to return to their positions because "Nobody called off the war."

TALES OF VALOR EP 34: William Dean Hawkins | When talking about Hawkins as a platoon leader during the battle of Tarawa, Robert Sherrod said "During a day and a half he personally cleaned out six Jap machine gun nests, sometimes standing on top of a track and firing point blank at four or five men who fired back at him from behind blockhouses. Lieutenant Hawkins was wounded a second time, but he still refused to retire. To say that his conduct was worthy of the highest traditions of the Marine Corps is like saying the Empire State Building is moderately high."

How Quickly Things Can Break Bad May 18, 2020

TALES OF VALOR HALF-HISTORY: Shawn Bandy and partners from Detroit Police | In this half-history, Dave brings a story from December 5, 1998 to the table. In this story, Officers Shawn Bandy, Lloyd "Mike" Todd, Ramon Childs, Jeffrey Bonner and David Pomeroy (among other responding officers) stepped up to face pure evil. On that fateful night where Officer Bandy paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to his community, the officers were attempting to stop a vehicle wanted in connection with a kidnapping and robbery of a woman and her 10 year old child.

In the words of David Pomeroy, where we discovered the dispatch audio from that night, he had shared this to remind officers "how quickly things can break bad on the streets." And for those who are not in law enforcement as "an opportunity to feel what we feel on a daily basis."

In our most somber episode to date, we remember Officer Bandy and also stand with the survivors of that night, including Officer Todd who struggles with his injuries to this day.

The International Soldier of Mystery May 15, 2020

TALES OF VALOR EP. 33: Larry Thorne / Lauri Törni | According to Major Larry Thorne's dad in a biographical piece he said, "My son was born to be a soldier." Well not only was Thorne, or his given name of Törni, a decorated soldier in the Finnish Army, but in order to continue the fight against the Soviets actually fought under the Waffen SS Banner for a time before being imprisoned in Finland. Eventually finding a pardon from the President, Larry made his way to the United States via Sweden and Venezuela and was able to enlist in the U.S. Military. He would go on to become a well known special forces soldier, becoming a decorated soldier in the Vietnam conflict.

This guy's story is unbelievable; a true international soldier of mystery! Stay battle ready my friends!

Instantaneous Heroism May 11, 2020

TALES OF VALOR HALF-HISTORY: Robert D. Maxwell | From Maxwell's Medal of Honor citation:

Technician Fifth Grade Maxwell and three other soldiers, armed only with .45 caliber automatic pistols, defended the battalion observation post against an overwhelming onslaught by enemy infantrymen in approximately platoon strength, supported by 20-mm. flak and machinegun fire, who had infiltrated through the battalion's forward companies and were attacking the observation post with machinegun, machine pistol, and grenade fire at ranges as close as ten yards.

Despite a hail of fire from automatic weapons and grenade launchers, Technician Fifth Grade Maxwell aggressively fought off advancing enemy elements and, by his calmness, tenacity, and fortitude, inspired his fellows to continue the unequal struggle. When an enemy hand grenade was thrown in the midst of his squad, Technician Fifth Grade Maxwell unhesitatingly hurled himself squarely upon it, using his blanket and his unprotected body to absorb the full force of the explosion. The Bravest Marine Dog Ever? May 04, 2020

TALES OF VALOR HALF-HISTORY: Lucca (k9) | Serving in more than 400 missions and saving a ridiculous amount of human life in the process, Lucca deserves to be remembered for her valor. She was credited with finding ammunition, explosives and insurgents at least 40 times, without a single human fatality under her watch. Wounded by an IED, her handler Cpl. Juan Rodriguez rendered aid and helped save her on the battlefield. Lucca was retired from service and spent her remaining days with Gunnery Sgt. Chris Willingham and his family.

53 Seconds to Save Everyone Apr 28, 2020

TALES OF VALOR HALF-HISTORY: Officer Alan Horujko | 53 seconds from start to finish to step into a situation where a would-be terrorist decided to drive his Honda Civic into a crowd of people in an Ohio State University courtyard and exit with a butcher knife in attempt to take as many people out as he could.

OSU Officer Alan Horujko had different plans, however. As time seemed to slow into hours for him, was less than a minute to bring the vicimts peace that the attack was over. A recipient of the Public Safety Officer's Medal of Valor, Officer Horujko's story is worth remembering, even if the story is more recent history.

He Didn't Know What It Was to Run Apr 21, 2020

TALES OF VALOR HALF-HISTORY: Travis Atkins | Iraq, 2007 - Staff Sgt. Travis W. Atkins gave his life to save three fellow soldiers from an insurgent who activated a suicide vest. While initially awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, he would ultimately be awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously by President Trump, who said of Atkins, "He did not run. He didn't know what it was to run. He acted in the tradition of the 10th Mountain Division in his 'climb to glory.'"

Travis' son would receive the honor on behalf of his Father on 3-27-19. Rest In Peace sir.

A Donkey On a B-17? Mar 20, 2020

Gus Mencow was a navigator aboard the famed "Betty Boop Pistol Packin' Mama" and led his crew and countless other B-17s through 25 bombing missions, many of which they barely made it out from. Gus and his crew made the most of their time together through their tour from July '43 to February '44. Gus, who came from an immigrant family that prized higher education, lived his life in reverse by going back to school after raising a family, achieving his BA in 1988 and continued beyond to his masters degree in 2006. Two star General Sidney Shachnow didn't just live on "tale" of valor but was a man of valor. Surviving and escaping the evils of the holocaust, he overcame tragedy without ever losing his humility. We learn in today's story that there are four types of people in tragedies like the holocaust: perpetrators, victims, collaborators and bystanders. These bystanders had the power to prevent tragedy but were conspicuously absent not by their absence, according to Sidney, but their silence.

Florent Groberg became a naturalized U.S. Citizen in 2001 after renouncing his French citizenship. He joined the Army in 2008 and in August of 2012 while in Afghanistan, put himself between a suicide bomber and a team he was protecting. His tale of valor certainly is worth a listen!

Tales of Valor Half History: Tyler Gantt Jan 04, 2020

Happy holidays from Mike and Dave everyone! While we are on a little Christmas/New Year's break, Dave put together a little "half-history" story about Petty Officer 3rd Class Tyler Gantt, an aviation survival technician at Coast Guard Aviation Training Center Mobile. Gantt was presented the Distinguished Flying Cross by Rear Adm. John Nadeau, commander, Eighth Coast Guard District, at ATC Mobile, Alabama, December 20, 2019.

Gantt's aeronautical skill and heroism were instrumental in the rescue of 59 people during the Coast Guard's response to Hurricane Harvey in 2017.

Tales of Valor Ep 15: Jimmy Stewart Dec 18, 2019

After watching an iconic Christmas film classic, "It's a Wonderful Life" we stumbled into the life of the actors, Jimmy Stewart, that extended far deeper than we'd ever known. Stewart, putting his very successful acting career on hold in the early 1940s, served in WW2 and remained in the reserves after and continue his military career into 1966, during the Vietnam War.

The parallels between the well known lead character in It's a Wonderful Life and Stewart in real life cannot be just coincidence. Grab a drink and listen in on quite a tale of valor, if we do say so ourselves (which we do).

During the Battle of Taku Ghar, Air Force Tech Sgt. John A. Chapman took valiant action in putting himself before others in an intense battle on top of a mountain ridge in Afghanistan. Also known as the Battle of Roberts Ridge, in honor of Navy Seal Neil Roberts, what makes this story unique for us now is that it is the first story of a Medal of Honor recipient caught on arial drone footage.
