BECCA: Ridiculous, right? Nine weeks pregnant. In a bar. Drinking.

HOWIE: You said she wasn’t drinking.

BECCA: No, she said. But you know Izzy. Plus the place was probably clogged with cigarette smoke.

HOWIE: Not anymore. Clean Indoor Air Act.

BECCA: She was in Yonkers. You think they enforce that in Yonkers?

HOWIE: I wouldn’t worry about it. If the babies in France turn out okay, I’m sure this one’ll be fine too.

BECCA: You think this is funny, Howie?

HOWIE: Of course not. But you need to relax about it. Izzy could be right.

BECCA: About what?

HOWIE: The baby, getting her on track. It can wake a person up. It did us.

BECCA: She was bragging about a bar fight.

HOWIE: It wasn’t a bar fight.

BECCA: They were in a bar! Fighting!

HOWIE: Izzy hit someone, she didn’t get into a fight. Blows were never exchanged.

BECCA: What is your point? It’s okay for a pregnant woman to be punching people?

HOWIE: Well so long as they don’t punch her back, it’s probably all right.

BECCA: What are you—? Why are you defending her?

HOWIE: I’m not. I just think it’s silly to get worked up about it.

BECCA: I’m not worked up. I’m just saying.

HOWIE: You’re right, it’s a mess, but what can we do? Maybe it’ll be fine. Izzy’s not a moron. Okay, she acts like one sometimes but... A baby can be good for a person.

BECCA: I know that, Howie.

HOWIE: Alright then.

Do you ever feel tired after speaking? Maybe you’ve felt tension, discomfort or even pain when you speak in English. We can hold a lot of tension in our muscles and in our voice, especially if we feel stressed, nervous, or we’re using English sounds in a way that doesn’t serve us.

268. They criticized her English mistakes publicly… and this is how I responded Nov 15, 2022

Is English really for everyone? Not according to a YouTube channel named… English for Everyone.

The creators of this channel have published a series of critical videos targeting the mistakes of another YouTube creator with millions of followers – Marina Mogilko.

Marina, a non-native speaker, immigrant, and a very successful creator and entrepreneur is an example of what’s possible when you use English to reach your dreams, and you don’t let your mistakes hold you back.

But apparently, this seems to really bother the ’English for Everyone’ duo, who are on a mission to ‘expose’ Marina and portray her as a fraud, DESPITE the immense value she brings to her audience. (The numbers speak for themselves, yo!)

But it’s not just Marina that they are targeting. It affects every non-native speaker who may one day dare to speak publicly. It’s validating the worst thoughts almost every non-native speaker has. It’s sending a message to non-native speakers that mistakes will cost them their dignity.

In this video I want to share how problematic this approach is, the negative impact it has on the mindset of learners, and why we need to call people out on such behaviors so we can foster an environment that allows everyone to thrive.

I also want to use this opportunity to show solidarity to my fellow non-native speaking teachers and say – WE NEED MORE OF YOU!

WE NEED MORE NON-STANDARD ENGLISH VOICES IN THE ENGLISH TEACHING INDUSTRY.

Don’t let the grammar police and those who think that English belongs to them stop you from reaching your dreams, making an impact, motivating people, and driving students to take action in a positive way.

Because at the end of the day, what REALLY counts, is that you dare to speak. And say what you think and want. And how you make others feel.

And what DOESN’T count – is if you used ‘at’ instead of ‘on’.

Do you like learning phrasal verbs in English? But how often do you USE phrasal verbs in English?

One of the best ways to internalize phrasal verbs and use them more often when speaking is to practice them in context and attach some emotion to them – just like with any other vocabulary words in English!

In this episode I share SIX of my favorite phrasal verbs that relate to when I get angry. I talk about when to use them, what they mean, and how to pronounce them.

Here they are:

come on – disbelief or frustration at a situation or what someone said or did
pissed off – just plain angry about something or at someone
cut it out – stop it right now, I’ve had enough
freak out – suddenly feel very angry or panicked
blow up – suddenly lose your temper
get over it – stop making such a big deal about something

Do you find it hard to let go of control? In life? In your relationships? In your work? You might feel like it has nothing to do with your English but it does. Because we carry this need to be in control when we speak English.

What does that look like? – Not speaking before knowing exactly what you’re going to say – Not pronouncing words you’re uncertain of their pronunciation – Not using words you’re unsure of how to use them – Not speaking much to people you don’t know And more…

But in order to feel more freedom when speaking English, you have to give yourself room to grow and experiment and make mistakes. And that means letting go of control. And unfortunately, many English speakers as a second language don’t allow themselves that. What does it take to feel safe and supported in your workplace or when immigrating to a new country?

What is the right way to respond when you feel judged? Or criticized by others? What happens internally (and ultimately, how does it affect your communication abilities) when you feel stereotyped – only because English is not your first language?

And why does it bother people when they’re constantly asked “where are you from”?

In my Immigrant Experience series, I’ve been sharing stories of students who immigrated to English-speaking countries. But I also want to share insights from people whose work involves supporting marginalized communities, including immigrants.

One person who can speak to that experience is Gina Gomez, a business strategist & advisor who has founded a business development company that works with some of the biggest companies in the world. Gina’s company specializes in diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace. She has helped dozens of clients (myself included) create an inclusive and respectful business.

In this episode, Gina and I discuss how being a speaker of English as a second language in certain environments could foster microaggression and micro-inequities.

She will explain what those behaviors are, what they look and sound like, and how to manage them in the best possible way.

199. Battling Discrimination and Discovering Self-Worth in a New Country Mar 01, 2022

In this Immigrant Experience interview, we’ll hear the story of Marcelo Silveira, who moved from Brazil to the U.S. for work. In this interview Marcelo openly talks about his experience as an immigrant and the rough start he had when he first moved to the U.S. He talks about the loss of identity as an immigrant and the need to reinvent himself. He also talks about what it was like to be facing small incidents of discrimination, that affected his self-worth and confidence. But most importantly he will tell us about overcoming all obstacles and reinventing himself in this new country. Marcelo is an inspiration and an active member in our community, and I’m proud to call him our student.

Every immigrant has a story. A story about their journey, their identity, their accomplishments and struggles, and of course, the place of English in it. Many of my students are immigrants, I was an immigrant myself. There are commonalities, for sure, but each story is unique, a story worth telling and listening to.

Every immigrant has a story. A story about their journey and the place of English in it. Many of my students are immigrants, I was an immigrant myself. There are commonalities, for sure, but each story is unique, a story worth telling and listening to.

In this episode, I’ll be interviewing Rita Ramirez. Rita is a real estate salesperson, originally from Colombia, now residing in the US. Rita was a student in my program Accent Makeover and is a member of our practice group Beyond. As a real estate salesperson, one of her goals is promoting real estate investment within the Latino Community in Las Vegas.

No one likes to get criticized. Especially when the criticism is insensitive, detached, or meant to hurt. When we receive criticism, it’s easy and common to feel bad and even hurt. 159. Learn American Intonation, Rhythm & Body Language With a Disney Princess Sep 21, 2021

In this week’s episode, I’ll be teaching you the difference between stressed and unstressed words and sharing clips from Frozen 2 to show you how the character animation helps convey those operative (stressed) words. Stressed words are usually longer, louder, and higher in pitch while unstressed words are softer, lower in pitch, we say them quickly, and we reduce vowels there.

Just like animated Disney characters, good English speakers have body movement, gestures, and facial expressions that are aligned with the intonation, rhythm, and stress of the language.

146. What To Do When People Don’t Understand You In English Aug 03, 2021

What do you do when people don’t understand you? Do you repeat what you said? Do you stop speaking? Do you feel bad? When we speak a second language (and even in our first language), people may not understand us 100% of the time. This can be because of pronunciation, sentence structure, choice of words, and many other reasons. There’s no reason to feel bad about it – it’s part of speaking a second language. Yet, it’s always a learning opportunity.

In this episode, I’ll share some tips to help you deal with this communication barrier and know what to do when it happens, so you can be better understood and feel good about yourself all at the same time!
