Brody Buster was a child prodigy on the harmonica and was already making appearances on major television shows like the Tonight’s Show with Jay Leno and the 90’s sitcom staple Full House, all before he turned 10 years old!!!

Brody was baptized into the blues scene in Kansas City at a very early age and began forging a career that has allowed him to share the stage with the likes of B.B. King, Keb Mo, Quincy Jones, Chaka Kahn and others!

As you’ll hear in the episode, his battle with addiction nearly took him completely out of the game altogether, but thankfully, he’s in recovery and back to playing live and he’s got a brand-new record perfectly titled, Redemption, coming out in the Spring of 2025.

Brody will also be playing one of the most unique gigs a guy could ever land this summer by performing on the Durango Blues Train in both May and August.

He spent 17 years as a preacher and Christian songwriter. He was well into middle-age before he become known as a hit songwriter with folks like Eric Church, Dierks Bentely, Jake Owen and Wynonna recording his songs.

Over his life he also battled addiction and in the midst of dealing with that and multiple stints in rehab, he started writing the best songs of his life.

He’s a true inspiration to all humans, not to mention, aspiring writers who think they have what it takes to write alongside the best songwriters in the world in Nashville.

I was lucky to have a great group of musicians join me in the recording studio on my very first project back in 2003. The guy who handled all of the guitar work on that project was named Rodney Pyeatt.

Rodney, and those around him, realized he was a very talented guitar player early on in his life. His talents eventually led to him playing with some incredible musicians in his career including Selena, Rick Trevino, The Mike McClure Band & Stoney LaRue.

He’s now working a lot in the recording space as well as still working as a guitar player when his services are called upon. He’s had some amazing experiences and some that have been tragic in his life but as you’ll hear in the interview, he’s taken it in stride.

Through one of these events in his life he nearly lost his ability to play guitar completely when he nearly cut the index finger on his left hand completely off!

But you can’t keep a good man down for long and he’s still putting his God-given talents to work! He’s a good human being and one I’m glad to be lucky enough to call a friend!

Arguably, one of the most influential bands in the entire Red Dirt Music scene since it inception is The Great Divide. In this episode we get to visit with bassist Kelley Green about the early days of the band, their time as a nationally signed act, and the resurgence in their career as a band following a hiatus that began in 2003.

Now, with the release of the their first record in 20 years, Providence, the band along with their long-time fans feel like the prodigal son has finally came home.

Kelley sheds some light on the early years of the band, traveling for years in a Suburban and trailer while putting off the comforts of a bus, as well as the connection to rising star in the scene, Wyatt Flores; not to mention their recent appearances on the Grand Ole Opry and a gig at The Ryman Auditorium.

The episode wouldn’t be complete without us conversing on the mega-show(s) coming up in April in Stillwater where the biggest bands in Red Dirt will perform for 4 days in a row: The Boys From Oklahoma.

Lately Skip has been touring with some of the “best of the best” musicians in the world, in support of his latest project called “Road to California” released this past April.

We’ve hit episode #200 here on The Troubadour and this one is definitely a “feel-good” episode. I really felt that this interview with Jack Robert and Avery Grace of Blank Page was inspiring as well as interesting.

What Jack and Avery have done with their music as only seniors in high school is pretty impressive. This is another episode that really highlights what a presence on social media can do for you in getting visibility and making connections with other well-known artists that can not only eventually become friends and colleagues, but also help you with your own career.

The dedication these two have to each other and their musical aspirations is astounding for such young individuals as well.

It’ll be exciting to see what the future has in store for these kids!

Carly and I were thrilled to have Josh Crutchmer back on the show to talk about his 3rd and latest book, Red Dirt Unplugged.

Along with working a day job for a little ol publication called the New York Times, native Okie and Red Dirt Music Fan, Josh Crutchmer, is a journalist who’s played a significant role in getting recognition for the artists and the music we all dig for years now.

For example, Josh just spent an entire year basically embedded with Wyatt Flores as he rides a very hot streak into the fall. He was in the studio with him as he recorded his latest album.

Josh has also been spending a lot of time with The Great Divide as they capped their comeback this year with some Texas Music honors as well as their Opry debut in July and their Ryman debut (opening for Wyatt) coming in December!

Over the past year, Josh has also had his articles published in Rolling stone featuring artists like Flatland Calvary, Wade Bowen, Dylan Gossett, Koe Wetzel, American Aquarium, Cody Canada, Reckless Kelly, Muscadine Bloodline, Dasha, Shane Smith, Old 97s and Charles Wesley Godwin.

So, let’s just say Josh has his pulse on the scene and the exciting time we’re all experiencing in our favorite genre of original music. We were thrilled to have him on the show and we can’t recommend his book highly enough!

Based in Refugio, Texas, songwriter Devin Michaels received his first guitar in 2017 and has been weaving his thoughts into music ever since. His quiet nature meant that music could be an outlet – a way to get out all the things he couldn’t otherwise say.

While he was raised on George Strait, Merle Haggard, and his grandmother’s beloved Tejano music, Devin puts something a little grittier out into the world from his own fingertips. He combines influences from the music of his childhood with elements of rock and alternative to create a sound that is loyal to classic country but can entertain a rock n’ roll crowd easily. His songs conjure vivid images, making audiences feel every emotion Devin has poured into each line. Whether it be the angsty and angry Wasted Time, or the heartbreakingly haunting ballad, Whiskey, he brings the listener on a journey rather than simply telling them a story.

Backed by a five-piece band, Devin creates music for people who love hard and hurt deeply. He sees himself and his music as an outlet for the brokenhearted.

On this episode Carly and I welcome Nashville rocker and songwriter Bones Owens to The Troubadour. Bones has written with the Bon Jovi, collaborated with Jelly Roll and he takes a self-described Chameleon-like approach to music. Fact is, just before we recorded this episode Bones had been in Texas writing songs and fishing with Koe Wetzel and some of the Whiskey Myers crew.

On July 12th his new record “Love out of Lemons”, dropped. He’s actually playing in Sturgis, SD tomorrow night at the Full Throttle Saloon for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and for the whole month of September he’s on tour with another one of my favorite bands, Blackberry Smoke. For my Texas friends Bones will be at Gruene Hall with the Steel Woods on October 17th.

It’s Monday, July 8th, 2024 and this is an episode I’ve been excited about since we got it scheduled. In January of 2024, Americana band Mike and the Moonpies officially announced they were changing the name of their band to Silverada. Their brand new self-titled record just came out and it’s got some bangers on it. Silverada is fresh off of an album release party at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville and their upcoming tour schedule is insane! For example, this coming Friday and Saturday nights they are playing at Billy Bob’s and Gruene Hall respectively. And in the next few months they’ve got dates everywhere from Washington, D.C. to Seattle and from Milwaukee, WI to Luckenbach, TX, and just about everywhere in between.

Frontman Mike Harmier tells us about some new songwriting techniques he employed for this new record and some of you songwriters out there might just have some new tools to put in your bag.
