Interview with the Women of Walt Disney Imagineering (Part 2) Dec 21, 2022

On October 29, 2022, we held a special talk with women who made an indelible impact on some of Walt Disney Imagineering's most iconic and enduring projects. On part two of this special two-part episode of WD-FM, hear the stories of Elisabete (Eli) Minceff Erlandson and Tori Atencio McCullough—two contributing authors of Women of Walt Disney Imagineering.

Elisabete (Eli) Minceff Erlandson wanted to study art, but her immigrant parents insisted she study anything else and encouraged medicine or engineering. She chose architecture, which had its own challenges as a male-dominated profession. For many years, she was the only woman at WDI who had an architectural license. She worked on 11 of the 12 Disney theme parks and has lived in Hong Kong and Paris. She is also an accomplished set designer and art director.

Tori Atencio McCullough is another Imagineer with deep Disney roots—her father, Disney Legend X Atencio, was a Disney artist and writer. McCullough spent her 40-year career at WDI in the interior design studio as both a designer and manager, and in those two roles has worked on every Disney theme park.

Interview with the Women of Walt Disney Imagineering (Part 1) Dec 14, 2022

On October 29, 2022, we held a special talk with women who made an indelible impact on some of Walt Disney Imagineering's most iconic and enduring projects. On part one of this special two-part episode of WD-FM, hear the stories of Peggie Farriss and Kathy Rogers—two contributing authors of Women of Walt Disney Imagineering.

Peggie Fariss began her 50-year career at Disney as an Attractions Hostess on the Storybook Land Canal Boats at Disneyland park. She was instrumental in the research for the EPCOT’s Spaceship Earth attraction and later became WDI’s liaison to corporate sponsors. Her experience representing WDI’s artistic vision led to her final assignment as a creative development executive for Disneyland Paris, where for five years she led a team that doubled in size from 25 to 50.

Kathy Rogers’ career began in the Disneyland parking lot. She became an Attractions Lead and then was tapped to work for WDI at Disneyland in 1983. Working first as a coordinator, she rose through the ranks to the producer level, retiring as Executive Show Producer with attractions as diverse as Muppet*Vision 3D and Expedition Everest to her credit.

Located in the historic Presidio, a national park in San Francisco, California, the museum celebrates the remarkable life of Walt Disney by telling his story, celebrating his legacy, and examining his influence on the world of entertainment. Eleven years ago, we were founded in 2009 by Walt Disney’s daughter, Diane Disney Miller, who wanted to share the story of her father with the world. In recognition of the museum’s history, and in order to honor the man behind the magic, we have created this unique podcast. The Silly Symphonies Nov 20, 2019

In this episode we explore the Silly Symphonies, Walt’s musical series of shorts that changed the landscape of animation as an art form forever. The Silly Symphonies, beginning with The Skeleton Dance, eventually grew to 75 total shorts between 1929 and 1939, produced and released concurrently with Mickey Mouse cartoons. The Silly Symphonies were a platform for Walt to stretch the art of animation while bringing new animators into the fold.

In celebration of Women's History Month, the museum is celebrating with the opening of our special exhibition MAGIC, COLOR, FLAIR: the world of Mary Blair. We talked with remarkable women that worked alongside Walt Disney: Kathryn Beaumont, Ginny Mack, and Alice Davis. (03:03) Kathryn Beaumont started as a voice actor at The Walt Disney Studios as Alice in Alice in Wonderland (1951) and then provided the voice of Wendy in Peter Pan (1953). (22:21) Ginny Mack was one of the original ink and painters for The Walt Disney Company but was also a face model for everyone's favorite pixie, Tinker Bell. (38:30) Alice Davis was a costumer for Walt Disney Imagineering, dressing the children of the world in it's a small world and the swashbuckling pirates in Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland.

In this special episode hear from three Disney Legends: Floyd Norman, Ruthie Tompson, and Richard Sherman. (03:00) Floyd Norman started his career in the mid-1950s as an inbetweener on Sleeping Beauty (1959), The Sword and the Stone (1963), and The Jungle Book (1967). (15:32) Ruthie Tompson, as a child in the 1920s she lived very close to the Disney Brothers Studio on Kingswell Avenue, which she frequently walked by. He path with the Disney brothers were cross again when she was hired by Walt to work on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). She spent 40 years at The Walt Disney Studios, working on almost every animated feature up to The Rescuers (1977). (27:50) Richard Sherman and his brother Robert started their career at Disney in 1960, in just 13 years they wrote over 200 songs, many of which are still popular today. Their music in Mary Poppins (1964)garnered them an Academy Award for their song "Chim Chim Cher-ee."
