Paul Bowman greatly enjoys helping individuals achieve their philanthropic goals through careful estate planning. With over 20 years of diverse fundraising experience in higher education, social services and currently a Methodist foundation, Paul understands the thrill of working in a one-person development shop as well as with a team of professionals. He believes that every development officer should possess certain tools in their toolbox to confidently suggest, discuss and close planned gifts.

He is a past president of AFP, the Smoky Mountain Planned Giving Council and AFP’s 2013 “Non-Profit Professional of the Year.”

Paul Bowman is currently the Executive Director for the Holston Conference Foundation. He is responsible for developing, implementing and promoting planned giving for Foundation. This includes working with individuals on their personal estate plans, as well as encouraging churches and Methodist agencies to formalize and promote planned giving to their constituents.

In addition to working in the non-profit arena, Paul enjoys teaching history online to college students and making sure his teenagers do not embarrass him too much.

Freddi Birdwell is founder and CEO of Red Bird Consulting, and president of Redbird Strategic Resources, an enterprise of Lawhorn CPA Group. Freddi is a seasoned fundraising professional with more than 25 years invested in fundraising and nonprofit management. Her progressive career includes extensive work with the American Cancer Society, where she served in a variety of leadership positions, and with Catholic Charities of East Tennessee, where she spent eight years as Director of Development and Community Relations. She has worked at the local, state and regional levels. Her experience inspired her to become a consultant and trainer, with a passion for helping small to medium nonprofits reach the next level of service to their communities.

Freddi holds the Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) credential and is a past president of the Great Smoky Mountain Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. She has served on the board of the Smoky Mountain Planned Giving Council and is the 2018 president of the Knoxville Association of Women Executives. Freddi earned a BS in Secondary Education at the University of Memphis, with endorsements in English and speech/communications, and completed additional coursework in communications and public relations at UT Knoxville. She knows all the words to “Rocky Top.”

Denetria or “Mrs. Dee Dee” as she is affectionately known as to the girls, is the founder and Executive Director of Girl Talk, Inc. She is the wife of Kenneth Moore, a Worship Leader at Cokesbury Church, the mother of a beautiful daughter, Tailynn and son, Zion, who is in Heaven. She is a native of Memphis, TN and a 2007 graduate of the University of Tennessee with a B. A. in Sociology. Denetria founded GIRL TALK in the living room of her East Knoxville apartment in 2006.

With a burden to prevent teens from making the same mistakes she herself made as a young woman, Denetria began mentoring girls and within a short time GIRL TALK was born. Becoming a single mother at 19, Denetria’s theory is that “if I can teach girls to love themselves and not seek validation from a guy, I can prevent her from going down the road that I went down.”

Her vision for the organization is to see young women excel beyond their dreams and to increase the self-worth of young ladies so that they can reach their full potential in life and be the best that they can be.

5: Angelia Jones Jan 31, 2018

In episode 5, we talk to Angelia Jones. Angelia is the Executive Director of the Cerebral Palsy Center. We talk with Angelia about the role of the Executive Director.

Angelia Jones has lived in Knoxville for 35 years, after moving here to attend the University of Tennessee, where she earned a degree in Journalism. She has spent her entire career in non-profits, working to improve the lives of others and create change in our communities that will impact future generations.

She has worked with the homeless population, a mentoring organization, a local inner-city ministry, in the fight against Alzheimer’s, and is now the Executive Director of the Cerebral Palsy Center. She is leading this agency through change and new services for individuals with cerebral palsy, which is exciting. She first became an Executive Director at the age of 27, and has held roles of leadership in local organizations as well as with national non-profit groups.

She was awarded the Non-Profit Professional of the Year in 2015 by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Great Smoky Mountain Chapter. She lives in South Knoxville with her husband and their family of a rescued Boston Terrier and 2 cats.

Van Wolfe is the Executive Director of SafeSpace, an agency serving victims of domestic violence in Jefferson, Cocke and Sevier Counties of East Tennessee. Van is a native of Knoxville who graduated from Carson Newman University in 1983. Prior to spending the last 14 years as Executive Director for SafeSpace, Van was the Program Director at Kingswood School, a children’s home in Bean Station, TN. After over 20 years of serving children and families in crisis, Van still feels passionate, committed and burdened for victims of abuse and neglect. Van is a former member of the Governing Council for the Tennessee Valley Coalition to End Homelessness Continuum of Care and former board member of the Tennessee Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. She is a graduate of the 2010 Leadership Sevier Class, and a P.O.S.T. (Peace Officers Standards & Training) certified law enforcement trainer. In her free time, Van enjoys golf and playing the piano. She is the proud mother of her daughter, Abby and proud grandmother of Farrah Lynn.
