On this episode of Total Pebble Knockdown:
* Inspiration Points are one of those mechanics that can get overlooked while playing D&D. Similar systems exist in other games as well, but how do we get better engagement with those systems? A suggestion from our Discord server leads us to ask that very question.
* While your party is battling hordes of goblins in a dungeon, do they ever lose track of time? What kind of effects can time have on your party from both a narrative and mechanics standpoint? Is there a way to keep track of time in game? And also, how would YOU build a time system into an RPG? We do a little critical thinking to explore this subject.
* It’s such a simple concept, but it conveys so much information. We examine the concept of “tapping” in card games, what it is, how it works and why it solves a problem that could have been MUCH more complicated.

On this episode of Total Pebble Knockdown:
* Myst got a full-on re-imagining recently. Alex and Nathan remember when they played the original game that came out… almost 30 years ago!? How old are we!? Myst • Cyan
* Why do we see so many recreations of classic games? Is it related to us being old?
* What is the difference between remasters, remakes and reboots? We give some explanations, examples and recommendations.
* Recently Alex played the Beta for Diablo 2: Resurrected. What category does this fall in and what could they have done differently?
* Tabletop RPG editions can be a tricky concept for the uninitiated. We go over what they are, investigate a timeline of D&D and Warhammer 40K and speculate about what they could do for a theoretical 6th Edition D&D.

* We have occasionally backed some Kickstarters. How long does it usually take for those to fulfill and should we actually grab that alpha key?
* The Angry GM had notes for RPG players and our forum was awash with comments. What makes sense for new players and what did we feel required pushback? The expert and the novice weigh in. Memo to the Players #1: Taking Action | The Angry GM
* Psychonauts 2 came out and, for someone who uses the Twitter handle “Psitanium”, that’s a big deal.
* What is the difference between streaming and playing games? Why might you decide to avoid certain games? What is the value of immersion? How much work does streaming truly require?

On this episode of Total Pebble Knockdown:
* Something seems really sketchy about Roblox, by which we mean everything. A discussion jumping off from the Kotaku article by Luke Plunkett on the game’s player economy. “It’s Shocking Just How Shady Roblox Actually Is“
* Can we imagine a terrible world with microtransactions in tabletop gaming? A mind experiment we probably should not have done.
* Being competent is a real chore. A discussion on the curse that is being good at your job. Should be just be bad at things?
* Yes, Nathan played Boyfriend Dungeon and got all the hearts. Oh, and a cat can turn into brass knuckles. SPOILER WARNING for the ending of the game.
* What’s the difference between rogue-likes and rogue-lites? We compare and contrast while discussing Hades and Curse of the Dead Gods.
And so we come to the end… This is our very last episode and we took the opportunity to basically explain how Delve works, if it ever did. This is sort of a peak behind the curtain of where we’ve been and where we go from here. We give some final thoughts, advice and shout outs to everyone who helped us get here.

That’s it, this was the last one, go follow us on our upcoming new show over at Total Pebble Knockdown to see the shenanigans we get up to from now on.
Back on episode 2 we took preconceptions about roleplaying and dispelled them, with an experienced player explaining the basics to a novice. Now, on this penultimate episode, we flip that around and have that same experienced player ask what the novice has learned in the last 6 years. However, if you’ve learned anything about that novice, you probably have an idea how well that worked out.

So your character is dead. Now what? In what will be the last of Nathan’s monologues, he talks about his recent revisiting of Spiritfarer and how it informs character development after the characters are already dead. With the new update adding Lily into the storyline, we get a better understanding of how characters still resonate in a narrative after they are gone. Let’s discuss how that applies to you.

As we near the end of Delve, we look at how you end a campaign, something that you may never have actually done. Why do campaigns end? And if you could end a campaign, what would you want to do for your characters and story? We do a few thought experiments of what the end of a campaign should be on this episode of Delve.

Yes, this is the last live episode. We are in the home stretch now.
On this episode we discuss candidly the things we enjoyed and things we didn’t like so much in the last 6 years of Delve. We also give a preview of our new website, the content of Total Pebble Knockdown and some of our merchandise. We also go into what we have learned, if anything.
ALSO: DC enjoys seasoning; Salt may be missing for awhile; Seagoat lives in the future; Paul needs to get to the beach in a month; Craeve makes some unexpected merchandise options; Alex forgot some episodes; Nathan is confused about Count Chocula; and Delve gets TPK’d.

As we come to a close in our Delve journey, we look at the Hero’s Journey laid out by Joseph Campbell. How does this apply to our show? More important, how does this apply to some of the prevalent fiction and mythology you have actually heard about? And what can it all mean in gaming? These questions and many more partially answered on this episode. In this episode, we finally reach Stage 3: Return. They say you can never go home again, but actually you kind of have to so you can complete the hero’s journey. How does the trip home affect the hero and their homeland? More importantly, will there be a giant eagle?

DelveCast Live – Big Announcement April Show
Apr 05, 2021
Some may think this is an April Fool’s episode, but we really have some big news regarding the show and our upcoming plans.
Also: There are many games we are playing, DC is quite tired, James gasps at least three times, Alex crashes into a planet and Nathan can’t run a civilization.
You can listen to the episode here or download it for later!
So your party decided to be the villains… Or did they just become “morally compromised”? Or are they the anti-heroes? Or did they just steal everything that wasn’t nailed down? Or did they (accidentally) set a town on fire? Or did they moonlight as murder hobos? Chances are some of these scenarios may be familiar to you!
Nathan apologizes ahead of time for the sheer number of Fallout New Vegas references he makes throughout this episode.

So your party decided they want to be heroes… What choices will they make? Is this a choice forced on the players? Do those choices make actually sense? And wait, are they ACTUALLY the good guys!?

Jason Anarchy has plenty of drinking quests for you to go on and now he has them in a convenient six-pack. We discuss Jason and Nathan’s time working in newspapers, game bars and bladder busters. The first half of the live show was mostly about Goat Simulator. So what you are going to hear now is what happens afterwards. We pay our final respects to Anthem and Stadia, discuss the nature of DLC and opine for good mech and pirate games.
There are many reactions you can have when playing RPGs. Some of them are actually in game. On this episode, we discuss reactions, what they are and how they can be used. Also, we get some insight into held actions and action economy. And what about reactions in terms of story? What about automatic reactions? Well, let’s discuss that.

Remember when we talked about how you can’t copyright game mechanics? Well, turns out you can at least patent them. What happened with WB, Shadow of Mordor and the Nemesis system? What if this happened with tabletop gaming? Everything we know and probably stuff we don’t on this episode. Also, did you know someone tried to patent podcasting? Yup!

DelveCast Live – Here’s a Riddle for Ya
Feb 09, 2021
Somewhere in this episode we discuss puzzles in gaming. Where we discuss that is sort of a puzzle in itself. It was likely between discussing video game company acquisitions and Street Sharks. So, this is a pretty normal episode.
ALSO: Groundhog flakes, stuff you can’t eat at IKEA, ghost sharks, Power Rangers eating at Krispie Kream, something about RAID Shadow Legends, the pitfalls of licking toads, cat snakes, getting kicked by a horse and cats in breadboxes.

Delve 262 – Ramblethon 2021
Jan 26, 2021
Since it’s the first episode of the new year, this episode is mostly Nathan and Alex catching up on some recent events in one of the least structured of our typically unstructured discussions. From virtual BFIG to Nathan’s new computer adventure to whatever Among Us is, we definitely had things to ramble about.

DelveCast Live – 2021 A Delve Odyssey
Jan 05, 2021
It’s the very first Delve episode of the year and things are happening. Since Winter Sales are going on, we talk about games we’ve picked up. What will Nathan subject himself to now that he can stream games? Perhaps Alex will get a 14 point buck… in a video game. Perhaps Nathan will play a bird dating sim for Valentine’s Day. Who knows. Also: We subject James to the horrors of Street Sharks and Mystic Knights; DC tells us about how mad a mage can be; we weigh the benefits of a gold grung monk; and we establish that Alex and Nathan have not run any games in years.

In the midst of all the shiny new big budget games on the market, Psitanium wanted to take a moment to explain why he’s not playing them and is instead awash with indie titles. We’re experiencing a gaming Renaissance, but you might not know it. Moreover, you should be taking advantage of it.

By popular demand, we are finally doing an episode on initiative. Turns out it took so long to do this episode because of our lack of initiative, so this makes narrative sense.
Alright, so do we need initiative at all? Could it be used for more than starting combat? Can it be implemented in a different way than rolling? This and so much more on Delve.

DelveCast Live – Jingling All The Bells
Dec 08, 2020
It’s our last live episode for the season! DC talks a little about streaming and what he thinks about Ubisoft games. We discuss things we want Santa to bring us and what Delve might do for a holiday special. Also, James is still working on his system and playtesting; Nathan looks at indie games that go a step above; and DC learns about the majestic SkateBird.

As we continue down the Reddit game ideas forum, we get into some longer questions. First, we discuss the idea of having characters that need to continue the previous character’s story arc after they die. Second, we discuss what happens when the game world levels up instead of your character.

It’s been a weird year, a weird month, a weird day, a weird minute. But right now, let’s see if it gets any weirder when we visit Reddit again. The last time we explored the subreddit “tabletopgamedesign” but this time we look at “gameideas”. Will this fuel our imagination or provide assorted nightmare fuel? Listen to find out!

It’s almost Thanksgiving and it’s almost time for Nathan to buy a gaming PC. In fact, that’s what he’s thankful for. On this episode, we discuss our Thanksgiving nicknames, build a PC (no seriously, we do that) and discuss some new games we are playing.
ALSO: Nathan played a game called Spiritfarer; Craeve insists on using the full title; Paul doesn’t even need to drink; and there are single alligators in your area that want to meet you!

It’s almost time for Halloween, so Nathan and Alex are just gonna sit down and discuss a couple scary moments that happened to them playing tabletop RPGs. We find out how Rembrandt almost died and how Hephaestus did die, but got better. And we revisit the story that led Alex to place Nathan in a crypt of the undead.

Last year, Dustin DePenning came on the show to discuss Heroic Dark. Now, he returns to the show to discuss Death Divers, a setting for Heroic Dark. And this setting has demons in space. Why do I need to say more? Okay, I’ll say some more.
A “Demons and Carbines” setting inspired by the Expanse and Doom, Death Divers is currently on Kickstarter along with the deluxe edition of Heroic Dark. Dustin explains what additions are in the Deluxe Edition and what terrible things might befall you in Death Divers.

Craig Campbell has made roughly a million games and has been on the show several times to discuss them. And we are always happy to have him on, as he and Nathan had a spirited conversation about his latest game Good Strong Hands, on Kickstarter right now. And if you needed more to pique your interest besides the obvious Neverending Story reference, may I introduce you to the otterkin?

Well it’s October and therefore we have to do a spoopy episode about ghosts and vampires and monsters and stuff. And I guess we kind of did that? We discuss why we might like the themes of horror but not horror games specifically. And what would happen if you tried to make Universal monsters into D&D monsters? And what if the Scooby Squad was a D&D party? Perhaps Buffy? Yeah, it goes there.
ALSO: Nathan does not understand memes; Alex loves his Fallout 4 mods; DC found your next favorite holiday candy; James is Shaggy; who is this Ferrari guy; and a discussion on Microsoft buying Bethesda and pretty much everything else while they are at it.

Delve 255 – The 4 (or 5) Essential Elements
Sep 21, 2020
Nathan was going to do a quick episode about the essential elements of game design. However, just minutes into looking at those elements he had three different lists of those elements. What do we prioritize? How many elements are there? Join Nathan as he goes down this rabbit hole.
If you’d like to read Darran Jamieson’s article on the “C4” of game design, you can find Part 1 and Part 2 here.

Stealth gameplay can often feel like an afterthought in gaming. After creating a rich combat system, actively trying to avoid or tactically approach that system can feel underwhelming. It can also feel slow or stilted in terms of gameplay. But what if we could let stealth stand toe to toe with other methods of gameplay? How can we make it feel more balanced with other systems? Let’s discuss.

We can call it Delveloper Delvelopment if it helps. Following our most recent episodes, we dig a little further into sunk cost fallacy. Also, we get to hear more from James regarding his RPG system, including a renaming and future plans. We send a shout out to Chris Bissette and The Wretched, leading to a discussion about single player RPGs. DC shares his experience playing The Avengers, more specifically playing Ms. Marvel. Nathan feels disappointed in the lack of Squirrel Girl in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This and so much more on DelveCast Live.
NOTE: This episode of DelveCast Live has been edited from it’s original recording, due to unforeseen circumstances and people involved in the tail end of our stream. Although it typically applies to economics, Sunk Cost Fallacy can apply to a wide range of endeavors. Really any time you find yourself unable to let go of something due to the time and money investment you have already made, you have become trapped in this phenomenon. So, what can you do about it? On this episode, Nathan discusses a few ways you can reframe that thinking to make it easier to move on.

So, you wanted to do everything at the same time and somehow that didn’t work out. Perhaps you overloaded your synapses with far too much. Perhaps you put a tight time frame in place that you can’t accommodate. Perhaps you tried to be so efficient that you ended up being pretty inefficient.
But still, you plodded along, doing whatever you could whenever you could. And then a tree falls on your car and you start thinking about priorities. On this episode, Nathan discusses his struggle with prioritizing projects and workflow. He also gives you a couple ideas on how to fix this problem that he will likely not use himself. So maybe use them for him?

So, I have no idea what happened here. We covered a wide range of topics, I think. There might have been some bad words and questionable hot takes. I think we wrecked our credibility while talking about Star Wars and Twitter. Nathan rambled on about the history of Fable, because no one asked. Alex tried to explain how his GM-less system would work using a chat bot. DC played a lot of Zelda. Then we spent way too long playing with InspiroBot as always. Wait, you can print these on shortbread cookies!?

Delve 250 – The One With All The Bad Advice
Jul 20, 2020
For Delve 250, we did a special live episode and invited everyone to share bad RPG advice. They delivered. And after we ran out of bad advice, we may have accidentally given some good advice. And after that, Alex and Nathan discussed the journey that led to this point and plans for future projects. How long will Delve continue? We wonder that ourselves.
Thanks to DC, Paul, Salt and Seagoat for dropping by in chat. Also, thanks to those who provided some more information in our Discord channel, such as James talking about bees and trees.

Welcome to the Dead Delves Don’t Die… no, wait Delve Destroys Decency… oh no, the Delvectronic Dentertainment Dexpo. Perfect. Since there was no E3 this year, we kind of did our own, discussing game announcements and conferences that have already come to pass and games slated for released through 2020 and into 2021. What makes us happy? What makes us sad? Are we going to be played by our stunt doubles? Find out when you listen to the closest thing we’ll get to a gaming expo this year.
ALSO, DC played a cannon robot; Paul picks some apples; Alex faces a Rereckoning; Seto Kaiba is a console now; InspiroBot loves you; KFC has a new console; everything old is new again; and Nathan does a sweet 360 kickflip in his head.

Delve 249 – A Series Of Unfortunate Mechanics
Jul 06, 2020
Since we were talking about systems that don’t get used much, like cover, perhaps we should ask a question about what you do when that happens. If you have something in your game that you’re stepping away from, should you abandon it, reduce it’s importance or revitalize it with something new and unique. Rummage through some old boxes of game mechanics on this episode of Delve.

We continue our interview with Chris Bissette and Matt Sanders. After talking about the Wretched and Alone Game Jam, we moved on to discuss Under the Floorboards, which is about The Borrowers. Delve 247 – Wretched & Alone Game Jam
Jun 22, 2020
Nathan sat down with Chris Bissette and Matt Sanders to discuss the current Wretched and Alone Game Jam going on until June 29th. We discuss Chris’s game The Wretched that started it all, The Sealed Library that Matt made using the same system and how a deck of cards and a tower of blocks can be so versatile to storytelling. #WretchedJam

Delve 246 – Judging By The Cover System
Jun 15, 2020
We took a look at Warhammer 40K Inquisitor Martyr to see how functional cover systems are in gaming today. Have we stepped away from cover as a mechanic? Is it still useful? Did you even know it was a thing? Can we make it more engaging? Should I wear a ring of logs around my waist? All these questions and more are explored on this episode of Delve.

DelveCast Live – Randomly Generated One Shots
Jun 08, 2020
Since Alex and Nathan were left to their own devices on this live show, Alex started up his stream of Minecraft Dungeons. But we’re truncating a good portion of this episode so it is much easier to digest. The big topic this week is experimenting with InspiroBot quotes to think up new one shot ideas. And if you don’t know what any of that means, listen to find out.
ALSO: Hungry Shark, doodoo doodoodoodoo; Nathan has to explain after-school specials to Alex; we miss the opportunity to talk with a raid in our Twitch stream; DC pops in to admire floppy discs; robots may be taking over the planet; and let’s just hold our own E3!

After watching Locke & Key, Nathan had some serious questions about giving your characters items of tremendous power, whether they understand how to properly use them or not. How do you avoid “The Music Box Problem” with your in-game items? Alex has some suggestions. DelveCast Live – Changing the Narrative
May 04, 2020
I would love to tell you we jumped right into the topic of episodic games and what they can teach us about tabletop design. I mean, that was the plan. And I wish I could say it didn’t take us two hours to get around to our main discussion point. But I would be lying.
So, we start things off with discussing DC’s neighbors in Animal Crossing and how his livestream series is going. Nathan explained what’s so great about Nier Automata and one of the worst ideas you could have in Borderlands 3. Paul showed up to announce he finally started playing Borderlands 3, which led to a very long discussion of the series that no one asked for, but you’re getting it anyway.
Once everyone was in the room, we jumped into our main conversation. After playing games like Walking Dead and Life is Strange, Nathan came away with some conceits in episodic games that he didn’t feel would translate well to tabletop gaming. So, we have a discussion about set pieces, railroading, player agency and the illusion of player choice. Why do these happen and can you avoid them in your game? Listen to find out.
ALSO: Other podcasts with Delve in their name paint a fascinating picture of the digital audio landscape and we mind palace our new conspiracy podcast The Tin Foil Hat Variety Hour. But wait, what if we we did a whole podcast series… in reverse!?
ALSO ALSO: Alex learns how to swing in Bannerlord; DelveCast contemplates finally releasing Tales of the Mirror Stone; DC shares his thoughts on the Final Fantasy 7 Remake compared to the original; Paul is on spoiler alert; Salt is an always-GM; James is surprisingly quiet; someone tried to market the abacus again; and Nathan looks forward to screaming at user-created maps in Levelhead.
(There was probably more, but how much description do you need people?)
Big thank you to Paul, DC, James for joining us and Generic Brand Salt for making a debut appearance on the show.

Delve 244 – Life Is Strange And So Are We
Apr 27, 2020
Nathan’s recent foyer into Life is Strange brought up some interesting questions about time manipulation and changing your decisions. How would you apply these things to a tabletop RPG? Is it even possible? And how could we use these powers to help Indiana Jones obtain an ancient idol? Bootstrap paradoxes, choose-your-own-adventure novels and a whole lot of GM book-keeping are up for discussion on this episode.

Craig Campbell returns to the show to discuss cops and robbers in space! Capers Offworld is already on Kickstarter through April 23 and we discuss some of the creatures and species you may encounter on your voyage. Also, somehow, there is a discussion on villain accounting practices and what to do with a tank full of sharks, should you come across one in your travels. Yes, it’s that kind of episode.
Find all sorts of new products and merchandise over at www.nerdburgergames.com as well as some new supplemental material.

With as many remakes and remasters as we see these days, the concept may be confusing for many. Let’s make it even more confusing for you. Some of us are excited for Final Fantasy 7 Remake, many have already expressed their love of Resident Evil 3 Remake, and Nathan is loath to mention playing Wasteland Remastered. It also gives us a good opportunity to discuss Nathan’s first experience playing the Final Fantasy X/X2 HD Remastered collection, with Alex explaining to him why he is wrong.
ALSO: The Delve Co-Hosts talk about the pros and cons of Eastern and Western RPGs… again; Alex really likes Legacy of Kain; Nathan wrote more lists; James found a sharknado; DC might be playing Animal Crossing; Delve+ is off to a predictable start; and Paul pops in for five minutes to mention BDSM. Yep, another day at the office over here.

DelveCast Live – Delve-Like Genre
Mar 09, 2020
Nathan had a plan to discuss the naming of genres and that did eventually get covered. We say eventually because a whole bunch of other stuff got covered beforehand. But once we got onto the topic, the term “Metroidvania” got vetted for accuracy and meaning. We weighed the benefits of using generic terms against specific reference points and what any of it says about those games and the people who may be tempted to play them. But all of this seems to pale in comparison to whatever the hell is happening with Alex in Rimworld.
ALSO: Nathan’s technical issues cut off DC’s big news about C2E2; Paul needed more to drink; Alex is killing ducks at an exponential rate; we bear witness to two weddings and a squirrel funeral; ExpLimited had it’s first livestream; never look up “organ harvest asmr”; 7×7 alignment grids are just trying too hard; and donkeys wearing pants.

While most people may be familiar with the D&D alignment chart as a meme for your favorite characters from Pokemon, Star Wars or The Office, you might be surprised to learn that it’s an actual thing in a game. On this episode we explore how alignment works, what it means for characters, what we might change, how it would be implemented in another system and whether it really matters at all. Will we lean toward Lawful Stupid or Chaotic Blasphemous? Find out on this episode of Delve.
And one of these Futurama alignment charts is probably accurate.

Hey kids, have you heard about this cool new game called RAID Shadow Legends? We haven’t been able to STOP hearing about it. On this episode we explain a little about the problems with the mobile game market, which has begun infiltrating the AAA market as well. We ask some important questions, like: What is the appeal of sitting idle while a game plays itself? Is your typical mobile free-to-play an actual video game? What predatory monetization practices threaten to ruin games forever? Can you really justify game previews and early access? Did we just want to do this episode so we could shout “RAID SHADOW LEGENDS” into a mic? Spoilers: Yes.

DelveCast Live – Delayed Indefinitely
Feb 04, 2020
A wave of big news hit us in January, mostly telling us about the virtue of patience. Everything has been delayed, sometimes indefinitely, and this causes a few concerns. Let us delve into those concerns on this episode.
ALSO: DC has finally played Monster Hunter; Paul learned something interesting about Pokemon Sword/Shield; E.T. gives us a cautionary tale about the video game industry; and Nathan has a goose problem.

Nathan’s Home Alone Christmas Special
Dec 24, 2019
Nathan woke up and realized that everyone disappeared. But the good news, or possibly bad news, is that he can pretend he pulled a Home Alone. Left to his own devices, what will happen? Oh, you can only imagine. Actually, you don’t have to, because you can simply listen down below.

DelveCast Live – Extreme Makeover: D&D Edition
Dec 10, 2019
Thanks to a very interesting question James Introcaso posed to Twitter last month, Nathan asked the group about sacred D&D rules that need updating. We talk about the terminology behind race, the usefulness of stat scores, the purpose of alignment, the nature of spellcasting and some alternative rules to the game that we didn’t even know existed before until DC told us.
ALSO: Paul pops by to yell at Dark Souls for a few minutes at the start; James has a character that may or may not be “chaotic”; Alex has a hallway full of twinkling lights; DC made a one-shot based on a side-scrolling arcade fighting game; Nathan got a new TV for Christmas which he used to play games from the last decade; and we take a look at character options for Feast of Legends.

Delve 239 – D&D Adventurers League w/ Alan Patrick
Dec 03, 2019
On this episode, we dive into the D&D Adventurer’s League, examining what it is, how it works and where it all started. To help us understand everything AL related, we got on a video call with one of the Resource Managers for D&D Adventurer’s League, Alan Patrick. Alan was kind enough to answer all our questions, even the silly ones. And we also get some information on new Seasonality rules and a couple hints of what may be coming in the future…
A SPECIAL BONUS FOR DELVERS!!! Follow this link to get the intro adventure for the season for 50% off (good through January 1, 2020)! ALSO, if you want to get one of Alan’s adventures FOR FREE, you can click right here. It’s not part of season 9 (though it’s still valid for AL play), but includes some pregens and encourages DMs & players to explore the prison city of Wheloon.
Delve 238 – Vampire: The Masquerade w/ Jason Carl
Nov 26, 2019
Yes, Jason Carl (World of Darkness Brand Marketing Manager and host of L.A. By Night) did come on the show to discuss Vampire: The Masquerade. Yes, Nathan barely knows the difference between a Toreador and a Nosferatu. However, all will become clear by the end of this interview.
We discuss Jason’s introduction to roleplaying games, his history working in the industry and his early love of Vampire. We dig into the World of Darkness, the nature of vampires and whether Alex may actually be one in disguise. We also talk about the mechanics of Vampire: The Masquerade and new features of 5th Edition. And, we get into L.A. By Night, things to remember when running a game and advice for new players.

Delve 237 – Gather and To Serve Her Wintery Hunger
Nov 19, 2019
We planned on having Stephen Dewey on the show to talk about spooky times with Ten Candles, which we did for a long time. You can hear that episode right here.
But we didn’t stop there. Stephen also discussed the games he’s made since Ten Candles, such as To Serve Her Wintery Hunger and Gather: Children of the Evertree. Find out what those are and how you play in this episode.
DelveCast Live – On a Scale of Baroque to the Outer Worlds…
Nov 12, 2019
Hey folks, we did another live episode for reasons. While we didn’t have a set topic as Nathan originally planned, we did discuss the ones we were kicking around. And it wasn’t long before Paul and Nathan were discussing the merits of Outer Worlds, we learned about one of the worst games Nathan ever played, Alex voiced his grievances with Reddit and DC could discuss his recent trip to GameHoleCon. Also, we have a few good discussions on the nature of feedback, the problem with survival mechanics and why reality in games is sort of unrealistic.

DelveCast Live – What’s Eating Nathan’s Grapes?
Nov 05, 2019
Nathan had a list of grievances this month. So, let us discuss what happened with Bethesda, Blizzard, 2K, Ubisoft and EA. Hint: It’s not good.
PLUS: Nathan really likes Outer Worlds; Paul has questions about D&D Beyond’s Encounter Builder; Alex does not like pandas; prepare for the “Jenner-ation” merch on the Kardashian storefront; and Pooh wearing a face mask saying “Free Hong Kong”. Chances are you won’t see this episode in China.

Delve 236 – Ten Candles w/ Stephen Dewey
Oct 28, 2019
Halloween is just around the corner and who could we possibly invite to our monster mash? Why Stephen Dewey of course, creator of smash sensation Ten Candles. Stephen returns to the show to discuss his favorite settings for Ten Candles, classic horror themes and what really scares him.
Delve 235 – Call of Cthulhu w/ Will Jones
Oct 21, 2019
It is a spoopy time of year. Because of so much spoopy, we now have some episodes on scary tabletop topics… tabletopics? Yeah.
On this episode, we talk about Call of Cthulhu with Will Jones from Encounter Roleplay. Will has run many campaigns using CoC, some you may have even seen on Twitch. While Alex is away battling ghosts in his computer, Nathan and Will talk about the nature of Lovecraft, Cosmic Horror, sanity scores, player progression in reverse, how to build a world full of unknowns, the terrifying concept of gods that do not care and why every player character is basically doomed.
If you want more from Encounter Roleplay, you can check out their website, Twitch channel and Twitter account.
If you want to dive into Tomes & Tentacles, you can find all the episodes right here.

Mike Myler created a really large game and that means a really long conversation. On this episode, we find out about primordial psionic abilities, problems with Common, undead dinosaurs, ways you can use the Gemini class and imagine what Cloud Strife would look like in D&D. We also learn about Game On Tabletop as a crowdfunding platform.
DelveCast Live – Spoopytimes Saturday
Oct 07, 2019
It’s that time of year when things get creepy. And what’s creepier than corporate synergy. Nothing in Nathan’s eyes, so we start out talking about KFC and Wendy’s entering the gaming market, as well as other companies that are courting the gamers out there. While it can lead to serious earned media coverage, it can have serious backlash as well. We talk about it in much more detail.
However, we also have some fun for the Halloween season, talking about how some of our favorite movies could be turned into horror films. And, hey, did you ever wonder if a mushroom could become a vampire or pass along lycanthropy? Wonder no more!
Also: Nathan imagines what a King Kong vs. Godzilla match-up might look like; Alex explains what he considers a AAA game; DC discusses his favorite mushrooms; and James gets traumatized by Garfield.

Mike Myler returns to the show with a new project coming to crowdfunding in October. Vast Kaviya takes D&D5E to a primordial sword & sorcery world with influences from Tarzan, Conan, Xena, Beowulf and Kull the Conqueror. Can you survive the fierce warlords who want to destroy your civilization?
Mike tells us about a procedurally generated landscape, a parasitic race you can play and the joys of watching Fire and Ice.
Way back at the start of Delve, we did an episode called 20 Sides of Die where Alex attempted to explain dice mechanics to Nathan. Now we come back to dice so we can discuss it in more depth, from the amount of swing you expect to dice pools to exploding dice to odd numbered dice. Nathan has thoughts on the design of the d4 and we quickly build a d30 system that no one asked to have.

Delve 231 – 2nd Verse, Not Like the 1st
Sep 16, 2019
Borderlands 3 was just released and one of the big criticisms came from people who felt it was just more Borderlands. This led Nathan to ask a serious question about keeping a game series from innovating their formula while not alienating their fans. Can it be done? Who did it well and who didn’t?
We run the gambit of talking Magic The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, Borderlands (as mentioned above), World of Warcraft, Dead Space, Pokemon, Final Fantasy and (yes) Monopoly.
If you want to watch the video Nathan did on Fallout 76 and brand identity, you can check that out over here.

Our live episode featured Alex enjoying Azeroth in WoW. NOT WoW Classic, because it’s a crazy time on those servers right now. However, we do get the image of Alex playing a moose while riding another moose. Good times.
Meanwhile, Nathan spent the day at a homebrew festival, so he was somewhat coherent. It also made him think about homebrewing in RPGs, leading to a discussion of some gaming moments that colored outside the lines.
Also, DC finished Oninaki, James digs into Terraria and Nathan met an actual person who listens to the show!
Delve 230 – Double Your PCs, Double Your Fun
Sep 02, 2019
What if you want another PC? Could you play two at once? Does one have to die in order to play the new one? Do those characters work together or against each other? What if your party is too small? Could you build a system with the intent of having players use multiple characters? All these questions and more are explored on this episode of Delve.

With World of Warcraft Classic releasing Monday, Alex and Nathan started talking about what that actually is, what the world looked like before all the updates, Nathan’s brief time and Alex’s extended time in that game. Also, what are the problems with MMOs, why has WoW succeeded where others failed and how do old games stay fresh?
Somehow we also got on time travel and alternate histories. Yeah, we went pretty far off topic at multiple points. But there’s some WoW in there.

Delve 228 – Unsolicited Advise, Part 2
Aug 19, 2019
The epic conclusion to our dive down the Reddit hole! We accidentally design a rich card-based war game. A question on co-designing with friends leads us to a discussion on marketing and community engagement. We ask if there is still a place for choose-your-own-adventure board games. And we examine how you can turn a board game into a LARP.

Aug 12, 2019
And now, Alex and Nathan try something a lot different. In this 2-parter, they dive into Reddit and address some of the tabletop game development questions being asked over there. We talk about odd card sizes, makeshift dice, ideas for Roll & Move games and the perils of being Bob. Poor Bob…

While all our friends and colleagues are away at GenCon, Nathan and Alex sit quietly in a corner of the Internet and discuss what all the cool kids are doing in Indianapolis. Before you know it, Paul and James had joined said corner. We talked about a few things at GenCon brought to our attention by a mysterious source called DC, caught up on what everyone is playing and got way too deep into Star Wars. The minute Plagus the Wise comes up, there is no turning back.
ALSO: Nathan needs more Mel Brooks, Alex could become Krang and we don’t know how to feel about Pathfinder 2E.

GenCon can mean many things. But usually it refers to the largest tabletop convention in America and it’s happening this weekend. In anticipation of our live episode of the same weekend, Nathan does a short episode discussing GenCon, including what that even means.

It’s one thing to build a unique system, it’s a whole other thing explaining why. Nathan and Alex discuss how designers can introduce or acclimate new players to their systems. Reference points, priming your players, starting quests, introductions and the like are some of what we touch on here.
Also: There’s a bird!

Delve Spotlight – That Time Dom Interviewed the Kind GM
Jul 15, 2019
While we’re dealing with technical communication issues over here, I wanted to give a signal boost to a test episode we originally had up over on our Patreon. Long-time friend and collaborator Dominic Parry took his first shot at hosting a podcast for a show we call More Than Meets The Die. This is the very first episode we put together, where Dom talked to Chris Karelis, also known as The Kind GM. But they didn’t just discuss tabletop gaming, they also went into Chris’s other interests like computer science and photography. Enjoy!

Jul 08, 2019
Coming off a busy month, everyone is missing! Except for Nathan and DC. So let’s talk everything we’re still excited about following E3. Also, Nathan goes on some long tangents about Spiderweb Software and the Tales series.
You can also follow Alex, Nathan and DC on Twitter, as well as the show itself over at DelvePodcast. Make sure you follow along to join in on all the topics!

We had a lot of possible subjects to discuss now that we’re back to recording after a break in content. But that had to be put on hold since Nathan was angry. Specifically, Nathan was angry about Fallout 76, battle royale modes, roadmaps to actual content, Bethesda being praised for doing the bare minimum expected of them and the current pricing standards for a game that lost the market immediately after release. Okay, so there are a lot of specific things here. The problems, potential solutions and general anger that goes along with them is what we’re talking about on this episode.
And, oh, Nathan had made a video about Fallout 76 when it first came out.
Delve 223 – Heroic Dark
Jun 24, 2019
Dustin DePenning is no stranger to the show. Having been on twice to discuss Synthicide and joining us for a live episode roundtable, Dustin was brave enough to return yet again. This time, we discuss his new project Heroic Dark, available on DriveThruRPG. He takes the age-old battle of heroes fighting the forces of darkness and make a non-setting specific system out of it. We discuss how players and the GM create the world together, the rules that get set up in Session 0, how players build their characters and what constitutes win/lose scenarios.
And if you want to check out Heroic Dark for yourself, you can download the PDF for yourself here on DriveThruRPG! A print-and-play version is also available now.

For reasons we still cannot quite explain, Psitanium and CaptainSugarBear were left alone in a voice chat for about 90 minutes. This surely ends well…
So, let’s sing some Twitch karaoke, take a poll to determine what we do, discuss playing versus running RPGs, discuss having waaaay too many projects to work on for our own good, argue about why monks are great/terrible, argue about which starter Pokemon are great/terrible and choose which Pokemon fits which D&D classes the best. Also, which are the best/worst Pokemon and what did the tortle do to a shadowfell dragon!?

DelveCast Live – Pre-E3! Electronic Excitement Exposition
Jun 03, 2019
Nathan and Alex were joined by DC, James and Brian this time to discuss the upcoming E3 and what we are excited to see. Also, games we are now excited to see that we didn’t know about before we started recording, games we may never get and wishes we may never see fulfilled.
ALSO ALSO: Alex has new hair, Nathan holds out too much hope for Beyond Good & Evil 2, DC owes too many bells to Tom Nook, James is so young, Brian likes when you climb towers and everyone gets surprised by Oninaki.
NOTE: Our regular episode will release tomorrow, where you get a second dose of Brian and Nathan talking more about Pokemon.
The thing we never knew we wanted until this moment, Oninaki.

We welcome Debra Hoenig Parizek of ParDen Us Gaming to the show to discuss Everyverse RPG. A project decades in the making, we get to hear about the reasons it was built, the work her husband Dennis put in to it and her quest to finally see it published. Will Nathan’s Quality score be above 60 or will he spend all his time smelling colorful flowers? Also, will it unicorn?

Delve 220 – Progression Systems w/ Emelie Van Rodin
May 20, 2019
Emelie Van Rodin, game designer and creator of State of Wonder, returns to the show to talk about a variety of progression systems. We step outside the issue of milestones vs. experience points discussed previously to look at a multitude of systems that advance character development. Sometimes, they are negative progression systems, like Cthulhu. Sometimes, there aren’t even levels…
Van talks about some systems you’ve heard of and a few developed in Sweden, as well as the system she is currently working on releasing.

Making History: Three One-Session RPGs is a book that creates short roleplaying scenarios at specific points in world history. Tristan Zimmerman from Molten Sulfur Press came on to discuss the historic context for these one-shots, the mechanics behind each one and why he chose them. We’ll travel from the frozen land of Greenland in “Norse Ivory” to a Native American city in “A Killing in Cahokia” to a modern day warship in “Darken Ship”. What challenges will our characters face? Listen to find out.
Making History launched on Kickstarter today! Why not check it out right here?

DelveCast Live – May The 4th Be With Us
May 06, 2019
This month, our live episode happened to fall on Star Wars Day, so we talked a little about Jedi things we like and contemplated Episode 9. Also, we discuss some forgotten gems of the GameBoy era, theories on that Sonic trailer and talk about a few RPG ideas we’ve had kicking around.
FUN FACT: Around the hour mark, Discord decided Nathan no longer owned a microphone and he had to reboot. Interesting that he was about to spoil the ending of the Home Alone video game from about 20 years ago… coincidence?
NOTE: We will have a regular episode of Delve tomorrow evening, where we talk about Kickstarter that happens to launch tomorrow. Coincidence!?

Delve 216 – Mods be Ever in Your Favor
Apr 22, 2019
We had a listener question and tried to address it as best we can. And that question had to do with hacking or modding an existing system, why you would do it and when a house rule becomes a hack. Okay, so it’s a few questions.
From Julian’s letter:Delve has made an impression on me, and has been such an inspiration that you have been listed in a post about Inspiration on my semi-regular blog. Yes, I am sharing the love about. The blog is semi-regular as I struggle to keep up to date because “life” keeps getting in the way, so I know the effort you guys put in to keep listing content every week. Delve Spotlight – More Than Meets The Die
Apr 15, 2019
While Nathan recovers from playing Lovers of Aether over the weekend, we present another Delve Spotlight, this time for a show we’ve been testing out called More Than Meets The Die. Hosted by Dom Parry of NineDragonsRPG fame, learn about members of the tabletop gaming community beyond their role inside of it. Learn about the journey they took to get there, as well as the hobbies, passions and interests they have outside of gaming.
This is the second of our test pilots, where Dom talks to Andi Watson, brand manager for FASA. She discusses how she got into gaming, her love of dogs and her love of video games.
Cover art by David Somerville
