Dr. Hamza Alshargabi is a surgeon who's treated casualties in Syria and Yemen. During our interview, Hamza describes emergency management in the Middle East, the underlying and sometimes conflicting social setting there, and the opportunities he sees to improve the profession.

    Show notes

Public/Private Partnership - the phrase is wonderfully alliterative, gets used a lot, and makes good sense to implement, but the capability still hasn't found its way into many emergency management programs. In this podcast, Liz shares how to set-up an efficient and exceptionally effective social media program, even with limited resources.

    #4 Ana-Marie Jones - Community Preparedness Mar 16, 2015
    Show notes

The 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake provided a devastating reminder of California's propensity for shaking, the vulnerability of buildings and infrastructure, and how much we rely on community preparedness. One of the great successes of Loma Prieta recovery is a new model for community preparedness - a network of non-profit organizations working together to promote life skills that include disaster preparedness. Ana-Marie Jones leads one, if not the first, organization to employ this new, successful model.

#3 Pete Turner - Engaging Communities During Crisis Mar 09, 2015

    Show notes

Building an emergency operations center, managing an EOC team, developing plans, conducting training and exercising involve plenty of work, but there’s much more to administering a county disaster program. Laura is a recently-retired emergency manager who candidly shared her view looking back on her 30-year career in the profession as well as the emotional and physiological impacts of the job.

#1 Gerard “Jerry” Quinn – Disaster Cost Recovery Feb 23, 2015
    Show notes

Emergency managers have enough to do on a day-to-day basis, but when a major emergency or disaster happens, the job gets much more complex. Disaster Cost Recovery is a phrase most often used to describe efforts by local, state and certain non-profit organizations to obtain post-disaster grants to reimburse their response costs and repair damage. Jerry has worked as an advocate for sub-recipients (organizations that seek-out these grants) for almost 30 years. He sat down with us and discussed what effective disaster cost recovery is all about.
