The Spy Who Never Existed: How Cold War Intelligence Turned Paranoia Into a Weapon Oct 16, 2026
    Show notes

During the Cold War, intelligence agencies discovered that one of the most effective ways to undermine an enemy was to make its leaders question whether their own officers could be trusted. Through fabricated intelligence, false identities, and carefully planted suspicions, deception operations could send counterintelligence investigators searching for spies who might not even exist. One of the most extraordinary examples emerged from the Soviet KGB's hunt for an alleged American mole known as SASHA, a search that became entangled with real betrayals, questionable intelligence, and institutional paranoia. This episode of Spy Craft explores how the fear of an invisible traitor can become nearly as destructive as an actual spy.

    Show notes

Arminius served in the Roman military before organizing a rebellion against Roman control. His knowledge of Roman tactics and his access to Varus helped make a devastating ambush possible. Discover how misplaced trust and compromised intelligence contributed to one of Rome’s worst military defe

The Conspiracy to Kill Caesar: Rome’s Most Famous Secret Plot Oct 11, 2026
    Show notes

In 44 BCE, a group of Roman senators secretly organized the assassination of Julius Caesar, the most powerful man in the Republic. Their conspiracy required secrecy, coordination, and access to a heavily protected political leader. Although the plot succeeded, its participants failed to anticipate the political consequences. This episode examines the planning, deception, and intelligence failures surrounding one of history’s most consequential assassinations.

The Spy Who Couldn’t Disappear: Why Implanted GPS Trackers Are a Dangerous Myth Oct 08, 2026
    Show notes

Could an intelligence agency secretly implant a tracking device inside an operative and monitor every movement? The reality of espionage involves serious technological limitations and the constant danger of electronic detection. We examine why a permanent tracking transmitter could become a spy’s greatest vulnerability.

The Illegal Who Became an American: How Deep-Cover Spies Build False Lives Oct 06, 2026
    Show notes

Some spies steal secrets from embassies or recruit sources inside governments, but the most patient intelligence operations begin with something more ambitious: creating an entirely new human being. During the Cold War and beyond, Soviet and Russian intelligence services deployed “illegals,” deep-cover officers who lived abroad without the diplomatic protection normally associated with intelligence personnel. They adopted fabricated identities, built careers, formed relationships, raised families, and sometimes spent decades appearing to be ordinary members of Western society. Documented cases ranging from Rudolf Abel to the Russian network exposed in the United States in 2010 reveal how elaborate these operations could become. Their stories raise an unsettling question: how does someone live a false identity for so long that the cover story begins to resemble a real life?

When Your Father Recruits You to Spy: The Walker Family Spy Ring Oct 04, 2026
    Show notes

What happens when the person recruiting you into espionage isn’t a mysterious intelligence officer, but your own father? John Walker built one of the most damaging Soviet spy networks in American history—and eventually brought his own son into the operation. The Walker family spy ring reveals how parental authority, loyalty, money, and gradual moral compromise can transform a family relationship into an intelligence operation.

Operation Farewell: The Spy Who Turned Soviet Espionage Against Itself Oct 01, 2026
    Show notes

In 1981, a KGB officer secretly handed French intelligence thousands of documents exposing one of the Soviet Union’s most important technology-theft programs. Instead of simply shutting the operation down, American intelligence reportedly developed a more ingenious response: let the Soviets keep stealing—but make sure some of what they stole was flawed. Operation Farewell became a remarkable Cold War story in which espionage was turned against the spies themselves.

Cold War Myths: Why Deep-Cover Spies Never Fought Like Hollywood Sep 27, 2026
    Show notes

In this episode, we separate the gripping fiction of The Americans from the gritty operational realities of the Cold War. While television depicts undercover Soviet operatives as lethal martial artists outsmarting federal agents at every turn, real espionage operated on a vastly different playbook. We explore the actual doctrine of the KGB’s Directorate S "Illegals" program, contrasting cinematic thrills with the patient, paranoid grind of deep-cover intelligence. Finally, we examine how the FBI’s real-world counterintelligence surveillance kept tabs on foreign networks operating right beneath the surface of American suburbia.

The Polonium Trail: Inside the Litvinenko Assassination Sep 23, 2026
    Show notes

When former Russian security officer Alexander Litvinenko fell mysteriously ill in London, doctors couldn't explain what was happening to him — until forensic testing revealed polonium-210, an almost unheard-of poison, inside his body. This episode traces how that discovery exposed a radiological trail across London and forced investigators to reconstruct a covert assassination method built specifically to evade detection. We look at the tradecraft behind the poisoning, why conventional toxicology initially failed to catch it, and what the case reveals about state-sponsored killing methods. It's a rare look at how espionage and forensic science collided in one of the most notorious poisonings in modern intelligence history.

The Approach Comes Through Your Phone: Reading the CHOSEN BRICK Advisory Sep 20, 2026
    Show notes

Britain's NCSC, the FBI, and the Dutch AIVD have jointly warned about spyware they attribute to Iranian state-linked actors, including Iran's Ministry of Intelligence and Security. The malware is delivered through spear-phishing on WhatsApp and Telegram and can steal contacts, emails, messages, screenshots, and microphone audio. Some victim data later appeared on pro-Iranian leak sites. Officials said the tools are almost certainly used to repress dissidents, activists, and journalists.
