The Interview

Who has had the biggest influence on your podcasting career and why?

Tony and Jenny Brueski from Real Ghost Stories Online. Listening to their show made me believe that you could do a paranormal podcast and have a little humor built into the show. Most of the paranormal shows are based on being completely serious. I love those types of shows as well but I’m not as talented as some of those people. It takes a great knack to tell a story the way Mike Brown from Pleasing Terrors and Richard MacLean Smith from Unexplained do.

If there’s someone, past or present, that you’d love to have an opportunity to go to dinner with, who would that be and why?

That’s an easy one, John Lennon. I am as big of a Beatles freak as there is. John Lennon is a musical idol to me and I really appreciate what he stood for.  He was not perfect by any stretch of the imagination but I genuinely believe he cared about people in general. We need more of that today.

What is it, about your audience, that continues to surprise you?

The fact that we have listeners on every continent except Antarctica blows me away. What most surprises us is the fact that people tell us that the shows makes their life better in some way. Some more than others but the thought that we actually can make a difference is amazing. We had a woman write us and tell us we gave her life back after losing a son to cancer. She said she was in a deep state of depression and her marriage has suffered because of it. She had lost faith that there was a god or heaven. She listened to some personal stories of ours on an episode and something she heard resonated and she felt better and believed in a higher power and was going to counseling. She gave credit to us. How do you even start to wrap your head around that?

In one word, how would your best friends describe you? Why do you think that is?

Loyal. There is a small circle of people that you can trust. My best friend knows that is me.

If you had one day, completely free, away from work, no watch on, and could do whatever the hell you wanted, what would it be and why?

That’s tough and I know I am supposed to say spend it with family or something along those lines. I would say I would love to be at a great music festival with all of my favorite bands. I’m a simple guy. Tracy is a simple girl. Life is good for us right now!

 Anyone you’d like to thank?

Plenty of people to thank but a few have helped us tremendously! Tony and Jenny, Diane and Denise, Phil Holmes and Jim Harold. Most of all, THANK YOU to all of our listeners. They have made our dreams come true!

Where Does ‘Timesuck’ Come From?

What is Timesuck!?!  Timesuck is a meeting of the endlessly inquisitive! It’s a comedically irreverent exploration of the world we live in. It’s one man, host Dan Cummins – that’s me –  described by splitsider.com [1] as a “one-man history wrecking crew, who will, even after the dust settles, leave you with some facts and tales that will make you look halfway smart at a lot of cocktail parties and bar hangouts.”

As Dan says,

Timesuck is a community of the curious that grew from just a few thousand weekly listeners to well over 100,000 in just a few months. Each week on Timesuck, I take a listener-suggested topic – well over a thousand topics have been sent into the show so far – and I do my best to provide much more than just a wikipedia rundown so they can start their week with a wealth of new entertaining information they’re bound to share. I’ve also had fun learning something new, and with Timesuck, I do my best every week to make learning fun for everyone else. So start off your week – new episodes drop every Monday – with some Timesuck today! And then keep on suckin’

The Interview

Who has had the biggest influence on your podcasting career and why?

Tom Vann from A Mediocre Time with Tom and Dan. He’s been incredibly generous with his time and really pushed me to launch the podcast on my own. Originally, Timesuck was supposed to be on a podcast network that I won’t name here, and once they heard the first episode they decided they no longer wanted to do it. They didn’t think it was a marketable idea. I was pretty discouraged, but Tom – who I’d met in Orlando years earlier when I appeared on his podcast to promote some standup shows at the Improv – he told me to just do the whole thing myself. He and Daniel Dennis told me what equipment to use, they promoted the Hell out of TImesuck to spread it to their fanbase, and put in me touch with the team they use for all of their merchandise (a team I still use). And, they’ve helped in so many other ways. And, most importantly, they’ve showed me you can have a lot of fun and make a great living as a podcaster. So inspiring! Without them, Timesuck would not exist. Also, as a sidenote, Timesuck has grown much faster and seems to have a much bigger fanbase than any of the other shows on the network that dropped me. Ha!

If there’s someone, past or present, that you’d love to have an opportunity to go to dinner with, who would that be and why?

Hmm. Honestly, probably Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam. I love how he’s handled his career. I love his political stances, social activism work, kick ass music, sense of humor, and relationship with his fans. And I love that, like me, he lives in the Pacific Northwest. I’d love to get drunk with that guy and stay up talking about anything and everything until 4 in

the morning.

What is it, about your audience, that continues to surprise you?

How nice they are! Holy shit they are supportive. They’re so involved and they’re really helped shape the show. I get easily over 100 messages a week from them, if not 200. I’ve met numerous Timesuckers at stand up shows and they are just the best people. Consistently. They send me emails with either praise or constructive criticism. They offer their help – my logo was designed by a fan, I have research assistants who are fans, business consultants who are fans, some software developer fans building a Timesuck app, someone running social media now who is a fan, fans are creating new music to use on the show, a fan recently set up a Timesuck trivia night at the brewery, and on and on and on. Nearly 600 iTunes reviews have been written so far, and I think only one was slightly negative, and even then the reviewer still said I was hilarious. He just didn’t like my religious stance. Fair enough! In the troll web culture we live in – I’m amazed that out of well over 100,000 listeners – not one has torn apart the the show (so far!).

In one word, how would your best friends describe you? Why do you think that is?

Wow. That’s a tough one. Hopefully, it’s “nice”. Supposedly, I have a pretty good reputation for just being a nice guy, which surprises some people because of how dark and angry my comedy can be. Who knows though, maybe it’s really “asshole”, but no one is telling me!

If you had one day, completely free, away from work, no watch on, and could do whatever the hell you wanted, what would it be and why?

I’d go fishing. Somewhere where I don’t get cell phone reception, where there are no other people, and where the trout are big and biting. Only the sounds of rushing water, a breeze rustling through the trees, birds, and me reeling in some fat fish. That sounds like heaven.

Any advertisers you want to give a shout out to? Or anyone you’d like to thank?

I’d like to thank Jimmie Whisman from Crime in Sports and Small Town Murder for being another dude who has supported my podcast from the very beginning. And also comic Scott Long who has done the same! I’s also like to thank the Timesuck fans for being the best fucking people on Earth and redeeming my faith in humanity – love you Timesuckers! And also Dollar Shave Club and Mack Weldon for putting out kick ass products and continuing to support the show. And also Audible – sponsor some more shows you guys! I listen to audiobooks every episode anyway – we’re a match made in Heaven! And thank you for naming me a podfluencer!

Patty Steele: Co-Host of ‘News on the Rocks’ – #TopPodcast Podfluencer of the Week: v. 14

Back from an International vacation & catching up on our Podfluencer report…with many rolling in and some great ones in the funnel!

What Are Industry Influencers Listening to?

We continue to feature a diverse group of shows, highlighting podfluencers favorite episodes of their own shows, as well as what ‘industry insiders’ and ‘podcast hosts’ are listening too!  The goal? Make ‘podcast discovery’ effortless, simple and enjoyable, highlighting the influential opinions of industry game-changers!

Today, we bring you PATTY STEELE, the co-host of previously featured CBS Radio show “News on the Rocks”.  In an earlier Podfluencer report, we featured her side-kick and co-host, Wayne Cabot, of WCBS-AM.

Who Is Patty Steele?

Let’s just say Patty is one amazing person…as an on-air radio personality at one of the top rated Radio Shows in New York City: She’s co-host of The Scott Shannon in the Morning Show on WCBS-FM.  She’s also Cancer survivor and has been a huge advocate in bringing awareness to breast cancer.

Her personality, energy and voice will captivate you as you listen to her banter each and very morning with radio icon Scott Shannon, while her contribution on the podcast News On the Rocks provides her the freedom of expression we all appreciate about the podcast medium…which goes well beyond the radio airways!

Pull up a cocktail and listen to news on the rocks!

The Interview

Who has had the biggest influence on your podcasting career and why?

That’s tough one because it’s really been about a number of people during my radio career who’ve encouraged me to trust myself and speak my mind. The beauty of podcasting is . . it’s like whispering in someone’s ear. It’s a lovely, intimate story time, like no other platform.

If there’s someone, past or present, that you’d love to have an opportunity to go to dinner with, who would that be and why?

Abraham Lincoln. I’m a fierce fan because he had the perfect ego for his job. Healthy enough to trust himself when he made a decision, yet at peace with gathering knowledge from people he didn’t necessarily always agree with. He was brilliant and complex, yet beautifully simple. Rock solid morals, an open heart, and an open mind . . an unusual combination. He had a remarkably broad sense of spirituality for a man of the 19th century.  And he was the ultimate storyteller . . it was his release valve.

What is it, about your audience, that continues to surprise you?

I’m not so much surprised as pleased. I’m impressed and delighted by their ability to listen to and enjoy such a broad range of topics.

In one word, how would your best friends describe you? Why do you think that is?

Curious . . because I not only love all sorts of knowledge, I’m fascinated with finding the back story on all of it.

If you had one day, completely free, away from work, no watch on, and could do whatever the hell you wanted, what would it be and why?

I’m a nature girl. My life has been dedicated to sound. That said, to completely clear my head, I love escaping the electronic noise, walking in the woods, on a beach, or floating on a country pond. So that’s the first half of the day . . then I’d head to a cool little blue collar bar near my place in the mountains of PA to drink and laugh with the farmers and gas company workers.

THE INTERVIEW

Who has had the biggest influence on your podcasting career and why?

The biggest influence on my podcasting career is two-fold. I started podcasting thanks to the Joe Rogan Experience. His show is was what got me hooked on podcast in general and motivated me to give it a shot. The 2nd biggest influencer would be the listeners. When I first started the Clock Dodgers Podcast I had no clue how it would be received. The Clock Dodger family who listen to the show are so much more than just “listeners”. The interaction, the support, the friendships, what I’ve learned, etc. all comes from them and the guest we have on. So they are the biggest current influencer that keeps this thing alive and pushes it in the direction we want it to go.

If there’s someone, past or present, that you’d love to have an opportunity to go to dinner with, who would that be and why?

Tupac. I feel he was way ahead of his time and his life was stopped way too short. His impact was massive and could have been so much more. He connected with people on a global scale through his music and any time someone can connect with so many people on such a personal level I’d love the opportunity to speak with them and help better the world.

What is it, about your audience, that continues to surprise you?

The Clock Dodger family is so diverse. Since the podcast is not niche based we have people who listen for all forms of content. Some listen for the interviews that we call “Inside Glance” episodes where the topic of discussion always varies depending on the guest. Some listen for the fantasy football episodes that we do with guest from all over the industry providing fantasy football advice/conversation. Some are fans of the solo episodes I do called “15 Minute Break” where I tell a story, rant or speak on interesting topics that come to mind. The beauty is that some listen for all 3 which is awesome to me. It’s such an honor to have Clock Dodger family from all walks of life and of different interest.

In one word, how would your best friends describe you? Why do you think that is?

Funny…because life is way better when you’re laughing!

If you had one day, completely free, away from work, no watch on, and could do whatever the hell you wanted, what would it be and why?

Be with my 3 kids and have a blast.

Anyone you’d like to thank?

Shout out to all the Clock Dodgers out there! Shout out to TopPodcast for the support. Thank you to my family for supporting me 100% through the rough & the good times.

Kyle Scott: Co-host of ‘Crossing Broad’ – #TopPodcast Podfluencer of the Week: v. 12

This weeks Podfluencer is someone that has embarked on a path as a disrupter…disrupting morning sports-talk radio! How is Kyle Scott doing it? He, along with his co-hosts Adam Lefkoe and Russell Joy are doing what others have yet to do…by doing their podcast Monday’s, Wednesday’s and Friday’s, at 6am…and dropping it by 7:30am…for your commuting pleasure. It’s brilliant. They are surely audio innovators…and the are incrementally capturing the Philly sports market via a multi-touch point platform.

Who Is Kyle Scott?

Kyle is founder of Crossing Broad, a Philadelphia sports blog known as “Philly’s most irreverent sports blog”, and he’s been at it since 2009. The site has become the ‘authoritative destination’ for Philly sports lovers, attracting approximately a quarter of a million unique users each month. Crossing Broad has been credited with breaking countless local and national sports stories. It was also named Philly’s best sports blog by the readers of CBS Philly.

Kyle has been a regular on Great Sports Debate, which aired on Comcast SportsNet in Philly and the Comcast Network, and was a recurring contributor on SNY’s Oh Yeah. He’s also been a guest and contributor on FOX Philly’s Good Day, CBS Sports Radio, 94 WIP, 97.5 The Fanatic, 106.7 The Fan (D.C.) and others.

Partnering with a talented duo, Adam Lefkoe of Bleacher Report and Russell Joy, they launched their podcast (currently 3 days a week) back in April, with the intention of going 5 days a week, beginning in September…just in time for Eagles season! Let’s just say they are creating a formula others may soon be follow…and we love it.

The Interview

Who has had the biggest influence on your podcasting career and why?

It’s probably a bunch of tech podcasters. Tech always seems to be about 2-3 years ahead of others in terms of content, with blogs, podcasts and video. The people who know how to use those tools are the first to adopt them. Listening to a lot of tech podcasts, I’ve picked up that the style we’re used to for sports talk radio isn’t the best style for the podcasts. Once you realize that you can apply the uses seen in other categories to sports, you can actually be ahead of the curve against other sports outlets.

If there’s someone, past or present, that you’d love to have an opportunity to go to dinner with, who would that be and why?

Jimmy Buffett. I’m just a big fan. However, I would’ve loved to have a beer with George W. Bush during his first term. Not that I support much of what he did, but he has influenced the world in many ways.

What is it, about your audience, that continues to surprise you?

That they are so receptive to new forms of communication and genuinely supportive of new and undefined efforts, even if they’re not perfect.

In one word, how would your best friends describe you? Why do you think that is?

Competitive.

If you had one day, completely free, away from work, no watch on, and could do whatever the hell you wanted, what would it be and why?

Spend it with family

Forrest Burgess: Co-host of ‘Astonishing Legends’ – #TopPodcast Podfluencer of the Week: v. 11

Returning to the show that ‘looks at the legendary & strange’, as well as the unusual events that have shocked history, we complete the feature on Astonishing Legends by bringing you Forrest Burgess, who co-hosts the podcast with previous ‘Podfluencer’, Scott Philbrook.

Who Is Forrest Burgess?

Forrest Burgess was born and raised in the Eastern Washington/Northern Idaho region of the United States.  Although the general area lays claim to its fair share of Fortean legends and anomalies like Bigfoot, Ogopogo and the occasional UFO, he has experienced none of it… so far.  The more he has learned about the unusual, the more he has come to believe that nothing is impossible, although it can certainly be improbable.

Forrest wants to know what’s behind the curtain.  He wants to, respectfully, know the secrets of the universe, or at least what he’s allowed to know.  He wants to know what are the things that we can’t see, can’t know, or can’t understand; the mysteries of life forgotten by time and ignored by most.  How do these things happen, why do they happen and what is the purpose?  He would like to know why things that shouldn’t happen, happen.

The Interview

Who has had the biggest influence on your podcasting career and why?

When I first started casually thinking about doing a podcast back in 2009 and checking out other podcasts to see what was being done in the field, especially within the genre of the paranormal, there were maybe only about 6 in total that dealt specifically with paranormal topics, only 4 that were decent and Jim Harold was producing two of them, The Paranormal Podcast and Jim Harold’s Campfire. Doing a Campfire style of show was an idea I had before I knew about Jim, so I couldn’t do that type of show, but was glad someone was doing it well.  Jim Harold had started back in 2005, when not many people even knew what a podcast was, and he was the first to show me that one person could produce a quality podcast or two, be a pioneer in structuring it for monetization and eventually make a living at it.  Since that time, he’s interviewed just about every major name in the field of paranormal research and “Alternative History” subjects, and his Campfire show may be the largest audio collection of people recounting their strange experiences on the internet, so my hat is off to him in a big way.  Then I would say, since listening to Radiolab as a standard radio program on NPR and then following them to a podcast format, Radiolab has had the biggest influence on me in terms of proving how excellent a podcast can be in regard to production quality and style as well as content.

If there’s someone, past or present, that you’d love to have an opportunity to go to dinner with, who would that be and why?

I would say the Count of Saint Germain, although from what we know of him by the accounts of his contemporaries, he probably wouldn’t eat but would indeed be a fascinating conversationalist. He’s the one person we’ve covered as a subject on our show that I regard as having the broadest range of worldly experience and skills and the greatest depth of mysterious and arcane knowledge.  Not sure how much of his secret knowledge he would divulge, but I have so many questions and would relish the opportunity just to pose them to him.   Also, the scenario of a dinner with this historical figure is not entirely improbable by some stretches of the imagination, as many believe he may still be alive to this day.

What is it, about your audience, that continues to surprise you?

I suppose I’m not all that surprised, but in line with Scott’s answers, we are always subjected to the whims and preferences of the podcast audience, and it makes clear, sometimes painfully, the old adage that “there’s no accounting for taste.” I would guess that maybe 90 to 95% of listeners that have sampled our show at least find it acceptable or even worthwhile and enjoyable and a notable percentage enjoy it immensely and continue to be big fans, as far as we can tell by the iTunes reviews and direct feedback, so that’s comforting.  Also comforting is that in reading the iTunes reviews of other shows we find to be of the highest quality, there are still those listeners who have a major complaint or find the show to be rubbish, so it makes us feel as though we’re in good company, at least in that regard.  Another interesting albeit expected by-product of human nature, is that no matter our stance on a topic or overall tone with the show, especially with paranormal stories, there will be those who think you’re not being skeptical enough, and those that want you to explore the more “way-out” theories even further.  To be fair, it seems there are slightly more listeners who want us to be more skeptical or who think we’re too credulous in general, but overall there appears to be listeners at both ends of the spectrum, with the most being somewhere in the middle with their beliefs, and adjust their viewpoints depending on a particular subject.  I can say that what’s not comforting is realizing just how many bitter and frustrated people there seems to be out there and within our present era of digital communication, how compelled and emboldened they feel to express their vitriol, at least anonymously.  The impulse to express one’s unsolicited opinions is perhaps a result of the personalization of our digital age, but I believe the bitterness is of course a component of the human condition that has always been and will always be with us – it’s just easier nowadays to put it out there.

In one word, how would your best friends describe you? Why do you think that is?

I would like to think I’m seen as “wise” in general but more likely just observant by those who know me?  I seem to have a knack for remembering all sorts of odd bits of knowledge and stories, but unfortunately just possess an average facility for putting that knowledge to any good use, except maybe in casual conversation or a podcast.  A Jack of all factoids, master of none.

If you had one day, completely free, away from work, no watch on, and could do whatever the hell you wanted, what would it be and why?

Probably reading and/or napping under a large tree in a beautiful meadow, because it seems impossibly idyllic and highly unlikely for me at the moment, and I would enjoy the serenity and the comfort of not having an obligation to be anywhere or deliver anything. Fishing at a secluded mountain lake would also suffice for the same reasons.

Any advertisers you want to give a shout out to? Or anyone you’d like to thank?

I would again echo and concur with Scott’s answers, but to put it in my own words, I would first give tremendous thanks to The Great Courses Plus, because not only have they been a sponsor from the get-go, they continue to support us consistently.  It’s one product I truly wish I had the time to utilize in its entirety or at least explore more of the topics they offer that interest me, but that could literally be years of learning.  However, any time spent learning in my opinion is worthwhile.

This is not to give any lesser status to any other of our sponsors, because as Scott said they have all greatly contributed to making our show possible and to our continued progress and we can’t thank them enough.  I can honestly say that with each product we’ve endorsed, we’ve found them to be a quality item and a good value for the money, and we continue to use and enjoy them ourselves without hesitation.

We’ve also been very fortunate with the variety of our sponsors, because from the Parachute Home sheets that go onto my Casper Mattress that help me sleep better, to the Harry’s razors, MVMT watch, Mack Weldon underwear, and Indochino suit that make me look better, to the Warby Parker glasses that help me see better and the Blue Apron meals that help me eat better, or The Great Courses Plus and Audible services that entertain and inform me, every sample we’ve been lucky enough to receive has been a welcome upgrade to my life in their own way.  My apologies to any sponsor I’ve failed to mention here, but you are no less appreciated.

THE INTERVIEW

Who has had the biggest influence on your podcasting career and why?

I would have to say Tim Ferriss for a couple of reasons. The first is his format. Until I started listening to his podcast, I didn’t think the long form, single guest interview concept was something I would enjoy listening to, let alone hosting. He proved to me that spending that much time with each guest is actually a great benefit as you can really get to know them and dig deep. The second reason is that I love listening to podcasts to learn, and I learn a whole lot from his show. And that is what I hope listeners get out of my show albeit on a much more specific topic.

If there’s someone, past or present, that you’d love to have an opportunity to go to dinner with, who would that be and why?

My family. I lost my parents and sister at a young age and I would love to have dinner with them. I’m not sure they would have ever envisioned me being a ‘podcaster’, and certainly not a boat club owner. It would be a thrill to share with them all of these endeavors.

What is it, about your audience, that continues to surprise you?

How about we replace ‘surprise’ with ‘impress’? I am constantly impressed by their passion for boating! It is such an amazing activity in so many ways and once you get hooked (yes us boaters love to make bad fishing puns) on the boating lifestyle it becomes this incredible way to experience life and make memories.

In one word, how would your best friends describe you? Why do you think that is?

Well, my college nickname was the Mayor. Yes, it was to make fun of me but also pretty true in that I like to meet and get to know lots of people. They didn’t want to walk to class with me cause we would stop to talk to too many people, or at least that’s why I think they didn’t want to walk with me. So maybe this podcasting is a good outlet for that!

If you had one day, completely free, away from work, no watch on, and could do whatever the hell you wanted, what would it be and why?

Easy! On a big yacht filled with friends and family on some amazing body of clear turquoise water. Just relaxing, floating around, maybe enjoying a couple of beers (we do have a captain driving the boat after all), and taking in beauty of being out in the sunshine and the fresh air. It would be a day we would all remember forever!

Any advertisers you want to give a shout out to? Or anyone you’d like to thank ?

I want to thank Diane Seltzer for helping me get this out to larger audience and posting my blogs on her site myboatlife.com. I want to thank all my guests but especially Dan Glickberg, Lisa Almeida, and John Giglio for taking part in this and bearing with me when I was still just figuring out how to do all the technical stuff. And I want to thank my wife for being patient with me as I spend hours recording and editing these when we’re trying to run a business and raise our young daughter!

The Podfluencer Interview

Who has had the biggest influence on your podcasting career and why?

Patrice Sikora, she was the Managing Director of the WSJ Radio and Podcast network.  She helped me get comfortable behind the mic, find my voice, and gave me confidence to host and launch several podcasts while I was there.  Even today, she is one of my biggest supporters.

If there’s someone, past or present, that you’d love to have an opportunity to go to dinner with, who would that be and why?

George Carlin, he was one of the greatest satirists of our generation and I think he would have an incredible take on what is going on in the world and how to fix it.

What is it, about your audience, that continues to surprise you?

I am always surprised about the folks that learn something new.  We attract a lot of podcast industry titans and influencers and it’s very humbling to know that we are still enlightening them.

In one word, how would your best friends describe you? Why do you think that is?

Dependable. Whenever they need me I am there, especially when they need me most.

If you had one day, completely free, away from work, no watch on, and could do whatever the hell you wanted, what would it be and why?

A vacation day that included golf, pool, dinner and a movie.  Four things I enjoy doing with friends and things I wish I had more time for these days.

Any advertisers you want to give a shout out to? Or anyone you’d like to thank ?

Would love to thank Blubrry and BlogTalkRadio.  They have been loyal supporters of podtopod for a long time and continue to be supportive of us not only financially but encouraging of what we do.

The Interview

Who has had the biggest influence on your podcasting career and why?

I’ve tried to learn as much as I can from listening to other hosts and how they structure an interview or even a single question.  Great hosts like Elvis Mitchell, Kevin Pollak, Marc Maron and Chris Hardwick have influenced me more than they will ever know.

If there’s someone, past or present, that you’d love to have an opportunity to go to dinner with, who would that be and why?

Harry Truman. Smart, tough, and I know he would enjoy a nice bourbon or two.

What is it, about your audience, that continues to surprise you?

Their range.  We have listeners who are high school students just starting to learn about business and investing. We’ve also got Wall Street professionals tuning in every week.  To have that range is both surprising and great.

In one word, how would your best friends describe you? Why do you think that is?

When my friends are together and I’m not there, my hunch is they use words to describe me that cannot be printed here.

If you had one day, completely free, away from work, no watch on, and could do whatever the hell you wanted, what would it be and why?

I love my busy life, but I think I’d spend a free day by myself.  Pop in my earbuds, stream some music and visit a few Smithsonian museums. Then head to Hill Country BBQ (no relation) in downtown DC for a great meal.

Any advertisers you want to give a shout out to? Or anyone you’d like to thank ?

Even though we’ve been podcasting since 2009, we’ve only had advertisers for the past year. Our partners at Podtrac/Authentic have been fantastic to work with, in part because they’re finding advertisers who are a great fit for our growing audience.

Wayne Cabot: Co-Host of ‘News On The Rocks’ – #TopPodcast Podfluencer of the Week: v. 7

What do we love most about our weekly ‘Podfluencer’ feature? It’s the fact that our featured podfluencers come from all walks of life. And this week, we bring you a voice that many morning New York City commuters will recognize. It’s none other than Wayne Cabot, the ‘longest-tenured anchor’ at the iconic news radio station, 880 WCBS-AM, in New York City.

And he’s teamed up with a vibrant co-host from the other end of the Radio spectrum, Patty Steele, who is a part of the powerful WCBS-FM radio show, Scott Shannon in the Morning.

Together, they’ve launched “News on the Rocks”, a creative & entertaining take on relevant news…the kind of compelling conversations you’d have with your friends over cocktails…and yes, maybe even shots!

Who Is Wayne Cabot?

Wayne is a ‘Jersey guy’, who’s been an avid listener of ‘news radio’ since the age of 13.  But his big break came on his 18th birthday, where he served a short stint at WPST and then quickly transitioned to an AM station in Princeton, WHWH.

Rather than go through his impressive & extensive ‘radio bio’, which you can read here, let’s look at his 17 year run at WCBS-AM. His bio at CBS New York.com states:

Auditioning for a job at the venerable KYW — and told there were no openings — Wayne turned on his way out the door and groveled to the manager that he’d be willing to travel to New York if there were openings at the Westinghouse station there. The manager smiled and said he’d pass that along. Wayne got a message three days later to call Steve Swenson at 1010 WINS. Today Swenson is in charge of all the CBS stations in DC, and that manager from Philly, Scott Herman, is in charge of CBS stations in New York and across the country.

After a year at WINS and decades at WCBS, Wayne is genuinely humbled to work among the industry’s best, both on the air and behind the scenes. Wayne is most proud of his involvement and the company’s generous support of such community giants as WHY Hunger, Special Olympics New Jersey, the Matheny Medical and Educational Center, and countless other charities. And he is grateful to WCBS News Director

Tim Scheld for embracing the heart and spirit that makes WCBS part of the local community fabric. To that end, the fact that Tim and Wayne are fellow Deadheads is no surprise.

After anchoring PM drive for 17 years, Wayne got the call to mornings, 5-10 am, and traded his martini shaker for an alarm clock.

About News On The Rocks

News On The Rocks is a cocktail party conversation about the news, a Happy hour among friends in New York radio news saying what they know, what they’ve learned and what they really think! No topic is off limits. (Unlike their WCBS Morning Jobs)!

There’s no better medium than that Radio industry that effortlessly transfers over to the podcast world…and Wayne and Patty deliver a unique perspective on the daily conversations that the staff at #TopPodcast absolutely recommends! Give their show a try…we know you will love it!

The Interview

Who has had the biggest influence on your podcasting career and why?

Actually it’s someone who does not do a podcast.  Howard Stern has been a radio companion since his first day on WNBC, which was my first day of college: August 28, 1982. He knows how to keep it real, keep it moving, and never be boring.

If there’s someone, past or present, that you’d love to have an opportunity to go to dinner with, who would that be and why?

Abraham Lincoln. Is there a better American?

What is it, about your audience, that continues to surprise you?

That they actually keep coming back for more of our alcohol-infused banter.  Patty and I have fun entertaining each other every week, and I guess it resonates

In one word, how would your best friends describe you? Why do you think that is?

Tall. I’m 6’7” – oh, you mean personality?  Well I know I can be a snarky dick, but I’m working on it.

If you had one day, completely free, away from work, no watch on, and could do whatever the hell you wanted, what would it be and why?

I would host a massive, high-school era keg party around the pool and invite everyone who’s cool, or who I’m guilted into.

Editorial Note: We will be featuring his co-host, Patty Steele, in the future…as a PODFLUENCER too! Stay tuned!
