Moving Past Trauma with Collier Landry

Many people have experienced some form of trauma in their life. I decided at an early age that our trauma should not be what defines us; it’s what we choose to do with it that does.
I was just 11 years old when I witnessed my father murder my mother in the early morning hours of New Year’s Eve. When no one believed me except one detective, I gathered evidence against my father, leading police to discover her body buried in another state.
After having my story featured on Forensic Files, I channeled my trauma into filmmaking and podcasting, gaining widespread recognition as the creator and subject of A Murder in Mansfield, a film directed by two-time Oscar winner Barbara Kopple.
Every week, I share my unique perspective on surviving true crime and trauma, overcoming adversity, and moving on. Along with sharing my healing process, I speak with fellow trauma survivors, academics, advocates, and storytellers and explore what came next.
I hope this podcast serves as a kind of therapy and reconciliation for myself, and anyone who may be processing betrayal and dark trauma in their lives.

Bye Leticia! Why Mental Health wasn't a factor in Letecia Stauch's murder conviction. May 10, 2023

Letecia Stauch, a stepmother from Colorado, was found guilty on May 8th, 2023, of murdering her 11-year-old stepson, Gannon Stauch, in January 2020. She was convicted of first-degree murder, murder of a child under 12, tampering with a deceased human body, and tampering with physical evidence. Prosecutors alleged that Stauch killed Gannon because she was resentful about being used as a babysitter, as evidenced by her search history. She stabbed Gannon 18 times, beat him across the head four times, and shot him in the jaw, according to prosecutors, before dumping his body under a bridge in Florida. Stauch, who worked as a special needs elementary school teacher, had claimed that her behavior was the result of mental illness or childhood sexual abuse. Prosecutors argued that she acted with intent and was mentally competent when she killed Gannon. The jury agreed with the prosecutors and found Stauch guilty on all charges. In an emotional sentencing statement, Judge Gregory Werner sentenced her to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of Gannon Stauch.

Prayers to the Stauch family as they deal with the aftermath of this terrible tragedy.

Joel and Karm, hosts of Surviving the Survivor podcast, join us for an interesting live interview.

Karm, a Holocaust survivor and retired psychotherapist, and her son Joel, an Emmy-winning journalist, turn the tables on host Collier Landry, making him the subject of his own interview and sharing his experience of visiting his psychopathic father in prison.

They also discuss the latest in the Lori Vallow-Daybell trial currently underway in Rexford, ID.

A report reveals that Lori Vallow, a woman whose children were found dead on her husband's property in 2020, had searched for information about children's life insurance policies before they disappeared. Court documents indicate that Vallow's search history on Google suggests she had financial motives for their deaths. Currently, Vallow and her husband, Chad Daybell are facing charges related to the children's deaths. The report emphasizes the significance of digital evidence in criminal investigations

The murder case of JonBenét Ramsey, a six-year-old beauty pageant contestant who was found dead in her family's home in 1996. The case remains unsolved, and the article examines several theories surrounding the murder.

The first theory suggests that JonBenét's parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, were involved in the murder, possibly in an attempt to cover up an accident or to protect one of their other children. However, DNA evidence found at the scene did not match any family members.

Another theory suggests that an intruder was responsible for JonBenét's murder. Evidence at the scene suggested that someone had entered the home, and a broken window in the basement appeared to be an entry point. However, there were no signs of forced entry elsewhere in the home, and the police were unable to identify any suspects.

A third theory suggests that a sex offender or a pedophile committed JonBenét's murder. This theory is supported by evidence that JonBenét had been sexually assaulted prior to her death. However, no suspects matching this description have been identified.

The murder of JonBenét Ramsey remains unsolved, and the truth may never be known.

Forensic Expert Dr. Kinsey Reveals Insights on Stephen Smith Case & Importance of Forensic Science in Law Enforcement Investigations Apr 07, 2023

Dr. Kenny Kinsey, PhD is a well-known law enforcement professional with extensive experience in criminal investigations and forensic analysis. Dr. Kinsey has recently been involved in high-profile cases, including the murder trial of Richard "Alex" Murdaugh, where he played a crucial role in debunking the "two-shooter theory."

Dr. Kinsey also discusses his current work with Bland Richter LLP and the family of Stephen Smith, a 19-year-old who was murdered in 2015. He has been retained by the family to help investigate the case and find answers about their loved one's death. Dr. Kinsey's expertise in forensic analysis and crime scene investigation has been instrumental in uncovering evidence and providing testimony in state and federal courts.

During the conversation, Dr. Kinsey emphasizes the importance of integrity and doing the right thing, no matter the consequences. He also touches on the intergenerational trauma that can come with being in a powerful family, as seen in the Murdoch case. Dr. Kinsey's passion for helping families of victims find closure is evident throughout the episode, as he discusses his investigation into Steven Smith's death and his hopes of providing answers to the family.

The conversation covers various topics, including the reputation of a law firm in the town of Hampton, South Carolina, that has represented a majority of cases in the area. Dr. Kinsey speaks about his experiences investigating death scenes, including those involving children, and explains how SLED (South Carolina Law Enforcement Division) differs from other police agencies in the state. He also touches on his plans for retirement and upcoming speaking engagements.

Dr. Kinsey also shares his thoughts on the recent revelations surrounding the addiction and crimes committed by Alex Murdaugh. He expresses disbelief in the idea that a lawyer could have consumed 340,000 oxy pills over a 12 to 14-year period without it affecting their work, and believes that the lawyer's addiction may have been under control at times or that he was straight during some periods. Dr. Kinsey believes that the lawyer's actions may have been a result of losing the family legacy and becoming embarrassed.

Throughout the episode, Dr. Kinsey emphasizes the importance of forensic science and the role it plays in solving crimes. He talks about the advancements in technology that have allowed investigators to gather more evidence and the importance of collaboration between law enforcement and forensic experts. Dr. Kinsey also shares some of the common misconceptions about forensics that he has encountered during his career.

The episode aims to provide listeners with a deeper understanding of the work that goes into solving complex criminal cases and the impact it has on the investigators involved. Dr. Kinsey's vast experience and expertise in forensic analysis make him a valuable resource for anyone interested in learning more about the field. The episode also serves as an opportunity to shed light on the importance of finding justice for victims and their families and the role forensic science plays in achieving that goal.

If you're interested in true crime, forensic analysis, criminal investigations, and murder trial this episode is a must-listen.

    Childhood Trauma in Nashville - A Survivor's Perspective Mar 31, 2023

Today's episode deals with childhood trauma in schools, centered around the recent events in Nashville, TN. Host Collier Landry shares what it was like at his school the day he found out about the murder of his mother.

Childhood trauma can have severe impacts on mental health, including anxiety, depression, and PTSD. It's crucial to seek help from a mental health professional to process and cope with trauma. Collier's story sheds light on the importance of having a support system and seeking help to overcome childhood trauma, mental health, support system, coping with trauma, PTSD.

    Nashville Events:

On Monday, March 27, 2023, a shooter opened fire at The Covenant School, a private Christian school in Nashville, killing six people. The shooter, identified as 28-year-old Audrey Hale, was a former student at the school and arrived at the scene at around 9:53 a.m. armed with two "assault-style" weapons and a handgun.

The Nashville police response to the shooting has come under scrutiny following a similar incident in Uvalde, Texas, where law enforcement took 70 minutes to storm a classroom after a shooting. However, in Nashville, the police response time was approximately eight minutes, and the shooter was taken down within four minutes of the police arriving on the scene.

The motive behind the shooting is still under investigation, and the families of the victims are receiving support from the community. The incident has reignited the debate over gun control and school safety in the United States.

Additional talking points in today's episode.

    • #Gwynnocent Gwyneth Paltrow was being sued by Terry Sanderson, a retired optometrist, for causing him severe injuries during a skiing incident in 2016, but she has since won the judgment. Paltrow was awarded one dollar plus attorney's fees in the case.. Paltrow counter-sued, claiming Sanderson's fault. There is speculation as to why Sanderson waited three years to file.

    • The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) officially ruled Steven Smith's case a homicide and reopened the investigation. Smith died on July 8, 2015, in a pedestrian vs. motor vehicle accident. A rape kit was done on Smith's body hours after the discovery, but it was never analyzed, and there is no confirmation of where the kit is or why it was ordered.

    • There has been public discussion about the possible connection between Bryan Kohberger's sisters losing their jobs and their brother's involvement in a criminal case. A recent Vanity Fair article outlined the fever pitch of conjecture surrounding the Idaho Four case. This raises the question of whether the families of criminals are victims as well. Buster Murdaugh’s girlfriend threatened to sue media and online sleuths for following her around and pretending to be media.

    • There is an update in the case of Michael Joseph Vaughan, who went missing in Fruitland, Idaho, in 2021. Sarah Wondra, a neighbor of the Vaughans, has been found competent to face her charges and has three additional felony charges filed against her. LE claims that these charges are unrelated to Michael. Sarah has two hearings scheduled in April.

Do You Live with Trauma, OR does Trauma Outlive You? Mar 18, 2023

In this episode, host Collier Landry shares his avoidance of reading a letter from his father that he received only a couple weeks ago on his birthday. This leads him to reflect on how this anxiety of avoiding opening the letter led him to think about his father's mortality.

Collier also looks at the similarities between Alex Murdaugh's behavior with his surviving son Buster Murdaugh, and how that mirrors Collier's own relationship with his father Dr. John F. Boyle, Jr. Collier touches on how he and Buster will both be dealing with the intergenerational trauma of having their father's murder their mothers, and destroy everything in their path.

Trauma is a complex and pervasive experience that can have lasting effects on a person's mental and emotional well-being. The question of whether a person lives with trauma or if trauma outlives them depends on various factors such as the nature and severity of the traumatic event, the person's coping mechanisms, and the available support systems.

Living with trauma means that a person continues to experience the effects of the traumatic event in their day-to-day life. This can manifest as symptoms such as anxiety, depression, flashbacks, and hypervigilance. Living with trauma can be challenging, and individuals may require professional help, such as therapy or counseling, to manage their symptoms effectively.

On the other hand, trauma can also outlive a person, meaning that the impact of the traumatic event extends beyond the person's lifespan. This can occur in cases where trauma affects future generations, such as in the case of intergenerational trauma, where the traumatic experience is passed down through the family line.

Trauma can also outlive a person in a broader sense, such as when a traumatic event has a significant impact on society or culture. For example, historical events such as genocide or war can continue to affect entire communities and nations long after the event has occurred.

In conclusion, whether a person lives with trauma or if trauma outlives them is a complex issue that depends on various factors. While living with trauma can be challenging, seeking professional help and having access to support systems can help individuals manage their symptoms effectively. However, trauma can also have lasting impacts on future generations and society as a whole, highlighting the importance of addressing and healing from traumatic experiences.

Moving Past Murdaugh: Guilty Verdict and What Comes Next? Mar 04, 2023

This episode is brought to you by BetterHelp. Give online therapy a try at https://www.betterhelp.com/MPM and get on your way to being your best self.

Alex Murdaugh, scion of the once-powerful Murdaugh family legal dynasty, received two life sentences on Friday, concluding a dramatic and shameful fall from grace. Despite vehemently denying responsibility for the deaths of his wife and son, Murdaugh was convicted of their murders. This is sure to carry on a legacy of intergenerational trauma in both the family and community in the Low Country.

During his sentencing, Murdaugh stood before Circuit Court Judge Clifton Newman, adorned in a beige prison jumpsuit and restrained with shackles on his wrists and ankles. The judge condemned the 54-year-old defendant and imposed the maximum sentence: two consecutive double life sentences for the murders of Paul and Maggie Murdaugh.

Following this tragedy, it is important for the community to come together and heal. They can do this by seeking justice for the victims, supporting their loved ones, and ensuring that this type of violence does not occur again. It is also crucial to have open and honest conversations about mental health and the importance of seeking help when needed. By taking these steps, the community can move forward from this tragedy and begin to rebuild.

Episode takeaway: In my opinion, the saga of the Murdaugh family is a cautionary tale on how intergenerational trauma can create a ripple effect of tragedy and destruction. I am hopeful the family can heal and work towards what came next.

The Elephant in the Room in the Murdaugh Case, and Intergenerational Trauma Feb 25, 2023

This episode is brought to you by BetterHelp. Give online therapy a try at https://www.betterhelp.com/MPM and get on your way to being your best self.

This past week, the defense team has started presenting its case in the double murder trial of Alex Murdaugh. Today, Murdaugh spent his final day on the stand answering questions from prosecutors, admitting to having fabricated stories, and committing financial fraud that he will be eventually tried for.

But WHY has there been no serious discussion about how opioids may have contributed to the Murdaugh family's tragic circumstances? Does the family's intergenerational trauma lead to their substance abuse issues? This means there has been no mention of how the misuse or addiction to opioids could have played a part in the events that led to the murders.

Opioids are a class of drugs that include prescription pain relievers, such as oxycodone, as well as illegal drugs, like heroin. They can be highly addictive and have been the subject of a public health crisis in the United States in recent years, with many people becoming addicted to prescription painkillers and turning to illegal opioids like heroin and fentanyl when they can no longer obtain prescription drugs.

Why is no one discussing the Opioid Crisis?!

Episode takeaway: In my opinion, the saga of the Murdaugh family is a cautionary tale on how intergenerational trauma can create a ripple effect of tragedy and destruction.

The Murdaugh's Generational Trauma; Psychopaths Side by Side: Chris Watts & Dr.Jack Boyle. Sumner Redstone. Feb 17, 2023

This episode is brought to you by BetterHelp. Give online therapy a try at https://www.betterhelp.com/MPM and get on your way to being your best self.

    Episode Highlights include:

    • This episode also features a segment of my Psychopath Showdown episode, comparing my father Dr. Jack Boyle to Chris Watts.

Chris Watts is a name that has become synonymous with one of the most shocking and tragic crimes in recent memory. The case began to unfold in August of 2018, when Watts reported his wife Shanann and their two daughters, Bella and Celeste, missing from their home in Frederick, Colorado. He later confessed to killing all three of them and disposing of their bodies in a nearby oil field where he worked.

    • Kansas City Chiefs win the Super Bowl!

•The Battle for a Media Empire: The Unscripted Story of Sumner Redstone and the Rise of Power and Corruption. In their new book, Unscripted: The Epic Battle for a Media Empire, James B. Stewart and Rachel Abrams chronicle the successes and failures of Redstone and his troubled domain.

    • The Murder of Chad Entzel: The Shocking Story of Nikki Sue Entzel's Betrayal

Nikki Sue Entzel was once a loving wife until she met her lover Earl Howard, and decided to take matters into her own hands. In 2019, Nikki and her lover murdered her husband, Chad Entzel, and tried to cover it up as a suicide.

Today, Chad's mother and sister read their victim's impact statements, calling her out for her lies and betrayal.

The sentencing for Nikki Sue Entzel has been pushed until March 6, 2023, when she will finally face justice for her crimes. The case serves as a reminder of the destructive power of betrayal and the importance of seeking justice for victims of crime.

    * The Murdaugh Trial: The State's Case rests

On day 20 of the trial, the state presented a comprehensive timeline that revealed inconsistencies in Murdaugh's statements to authorities. The state also revealed a possible new motive for the murder: in May 2021, Maggie was concerned about drug use and researching pills online after finding several bags of pills in Murdaugh's computer bag.

    • Intergenerational Trauma and the Legacy of The Murdaugh Family

PMPED, the law firm founded by Randolph Murdaugh Sr. in 1910, has been a fixture in Hampton as a one-person law firm for over a century. However, the legacy of the firm is shrouded in controversy and scandal.

Recent findings suggest that Randolph Murdaugh Sr. may have committed suicide in a train accident, rather than the accident being purely accidental. This revelation sheds light on the possible origins of the intergenerational trauma that has plagued the Murdaugh family for generations.

In court proceedings Thursday February 9, 2023,testimony regarding text messages sent from Alex Murdaugh promised Tony Satterfield and his brother Bryan that he would take care of them after their mother mysteriously died at the Murdaugh Family's hunting lodge. Instead, he stole more than $4.3 million from insurance firms. Text messages reveal that he lied to Tony and Bryan, telling them that he was finally getting some movement in the case while he had already received recovery payments.
    • Attorney Mark Tinsley Testifies regarding the Boating Accident Case. Exposing the Lowest of the Low in HBO's “Low Country: The Murdaugh Dynasty”, Bye-Bye Brady and Dr. Phil, Alec Baldwin charged in Rust movie debacle. Feb 03, 2023

This episode is brought to you by BetterHelp. Give online therapy a try at https://www.betterhelp.com/MPM and get on your way to being your best self.

Lowest of the Low: Exposing the lowest of the low in HBO's “Low Country: The Murdaugh Dynasty”: I share my thoughts on the docuseries. Alex Murdaugh, who is currently on trial for the murder of his wife Maggie, and youngest son Paul, reminds me of my psychopathic father with all of the destruction his selfishness caused.

Rusted and Busted: This week, charges of involuntary manslaughter were brought in New Mexico against actor/producer Alec Baldwin and armorers Hannah Guitierrez Reid for the negligent and tragic death of cinematographer Halayna Hutchins on the set of the indie film RUST. What would a conviction look like and how would this impact the filmmaking world? I share my own story of how on-set negligence nearly cost me my head.

Bye Bye Brady: This week saw the surprise retirement of two living legends: 7 time Super Bowl Champion and GOAT quarterback Tom Brady said goodbye, again, after 23 NFL seasons, and daytime talk show icon Dr. Phil McGraw of “The Dr. Phil Show” says he will be retiring from the show after this current season ends.

Balloon?: A Chinese weather / “spy balloon” has been spotted over Billings, Montana in the United States, having many calling into question our National Security.

This episode is brought to you by BetterHelp. Give online therapy a try at https://www.betterhelp.com/MPM and get on your way to being your best self.

In this episode of Moving Past Murder, Collier shares his personal experience of dealing with a "trauma hangover" after giving multiple interviews about the murder of his mother by his father. Collier discusses how sharing his traumatic story repeatedly took an unexpected toll on his emotional well-being and left him feeling exhausted. To combat this feeling, Collier turns to mindfulness practices to help "reset" and ground himself. Collier reflects on how he and other survivors navigate their parasocial relationships. This leads him to wonder if this "blurred line of reality" may have led Idaho 4 suspect Bryan Kohberger to potentially commit the murders of the four innocent victims.

The episode concludes with Collier sharing a list of these mindfulness practices with the audience to help others who may be dealing with similar experiences.

Ana Walshe, The Children, and What Now w/ special guest Gabrielle Fedora of True Crime Replay Jan 20, 2023

The investigation surrounding the missing person's case of Ana Walshe took a dark turn this week when her husband, Bryan Walshe, already in police custody, was arraigned and charged with her murder. Police still have yet to recover her remains. It is now being concluded that they were possibly incinerated after being sent to a trash distribution center outside Cohasset, MA.

Detectives used the suspect’s internet search histories, blood and DNA evidence, and footage of Bryan Walshe purchasing cleaning supplies at a local Home Depot with the couple's three young children to secure the arrest warrant and indictment.

Gabrielle Fedora joins host Collier Landry in discussing this case and others. Gabby is the founder of True Crime Replay, a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting families searching for loved ones and shedding light on existing missing person cases. Gabby channeled her own childhood story of abuse at the hands of a family member into the work she is currently doing to help others.

TikTok And The Dad That Got Away with Murder - Pt. 1 Aug 12, 2022

    In a Mass-Shooting, "Your Instincts Just Take Over." - A Survivor's Lesson Jul 08, 2022

This video discusses sensitive topics, including gun violence, mass shootings, and surviving those violent incidents. If you are triggered in any way, please stop the video and seek counseling from a mental health professional.

America is suffering through a bloody and ongoing epidemic for which there is no vaccine. This week's episode analyzes mass shootings and speaks to a woman who survived the worst mass shooting in US history with her children. You may have thought about what you would do during a mass shooting, but what do you do after? Physical wounds aren't the only wounds bullets can cause. As we hear, mental trauma can create scars that last a lifetime.

    • Listen to the first-hand account of Stacie Armentrout. She was injured but lived through the Las Vegas mass shooting in 2017. The bloodshed at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Vegas is the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. After the lone gunman stopped firing, 58 people died, and more than 850 were injured. Stacie was in the middle of it with her daughters.
    • What do you think in the middle of shooting may not be what your body lets you do? "Fight or flight" isn't always something you have physical control over.
    • "Locks are for honest people." Collier and Stacie discuss the bloodlust killers have and question what can be done to stop these people beforehand.
    • Could you be going to work every day and sitting next to a potential mass murderer and not knowing it? Do you know the signs to look for? Stacie and Collier explore the importance of making those answers more mainstream.
    • Shootings and traumatic events can trigger emotional breakdowns in survivors. Hear why Stacie says it's okay to experience those feelings and why it's essential to acknowledge that sometimes we can't control everything.

Ghislaine Maxwell, the convicted assistant to infamous sexual predator Jeffrey Epstein, was just sentenced to 20 years in prison for ruining countless girls' lives. Collier discusses the narcissism that runs through Maxwell's actions and her defense. Collier also reflects on the similarities his father shares with criminals like Maxwell.

PLEASE fill out this brief audience SURVEY

    • Collier explains why there should be no sympathy for people like Ghislaine Maxwell. He explains how people, even from affluent and privileged backgrounds, can turn to a life of horrendous crime.
    • Doubling down on their crimes and mistakes: why convicted sex offenders and violent criminals often believe they've done nothing wrong.
    • Grooming children takes all sorts of forms, but the main premise is someone coercing kids to do what they want. Collier describes how he believes his father was trying to groom him in an effort for Collier to take back his testimony that put his father in jail.
    • In her testimony, Ghislaine Maxwell attempted to make herself look like the victim without recognizing the real victims - all of the innocent girls she helped traffic sexually. Collier shares a letter from his father to show the striking similarity between criminals.
    • How do you deal with a narcissistic parent? The trauma they inflict on their children is horrible, but as Collier explains, the trauma they inflict on others can be even worse.

Answering Your TikTok Questions: "Did my grandma know about my mother's murder?" Jun 10, 2022

In episode 41 of Moving Past Murder, host Collier Landry answers some of his TikTok audience's questions in an open and honest conversational episode of the show.

Collier also takes a moment to weigh in on some rumors circling Reddit and the Twittersphere, his opinion on the importance of "Conscious True Crime" consumerism, and how the actions of the few should not overshadow the many survivors and victims sharing their stories in their search for justice.

The audience questions he responds to include the following:

    • What are some things you've had to deal with because of what your father has done?
    • Do you think your grandmother knew that your mom was dead? Or do you think she believed she had just up and left?
    • I was an elementary school teacher; I would have believed you. I am so glad that cop (Lt. David Messmore) gave you his business card.
    • Were you worried for your safety?

In episode 40 of Moving Past Murder, she and Collier dish on their cases, compare sociopaths and discuss troubles with the true-crime business. Threats and Plot Holes: The Radio Team that Interviewed a Murderer May 27, 2022

Decades ago, Pastor Ernie Sanders looked into the murder of Collier’s mother and even interviewed his father live on the radio. In episode 39, we hear from radio host Pastor Ernie Sanders and his associate Jim Kloos on what they’ve uncovered about the case over the years. Did Collier’s father have help murdering his mother and hiding her body? For the first time, citizen investigators revealed the evidence they gathered, which led them to a shocking new possibility in the murder case.

    • The bag over the head: as a doctor, Collier’s father would’ve known whether or not his wife was dead. So why did he bury her with a bag covering her head if that’s not how he killed her?
    • Collier’s guests discuss how this fact could be a hole in the case against him.
    • “You better stop coming down to Mansfield. Things are going to get rough for you down here.”
    • The eerie warnings possible police officers allegedly gave to these amateur sleuths to stay away from the case.
    • The two ways to go to prison: how you can choose to go by yourself or drag your whole family down with you.

Terra Newell: The Aftermath of Ending A Life In Self-Defense Apr 08, 2022

How do you move past taking the life of another human being, even when it is in self-defense?

How do you cope with Survivor Shaming?

What does moving past guilt & shame look like in the public eye?

In last week's episode (Moving Past Murder - Episode #31), an interview with survivor Terra Newell, many of my audience members were left with a few unanswered questions after hearing Terra's story.

Specifically, how Terra was able to move past ending the life of John Meehan, AKA “Dirty John." How do you deal with the public's scrutiny, moving past your guilt and shame, and the almighty "Survivor Shaming" from a self-righteous public audience?

I recently met Terra in person this past weekend, and she was more than to share more of her journey toward healing and recovery.

    Episode highlights...

•Coping with PTSD and the double trauma when someone tries to take your life and you take theirs in self-defense.

    •Dealing with "Survivor Shaming".

Please enjoy this follow-up interview of Moving Past Murder with Terra Newell.

"I Ended The Madness Of Dirty John" Survivor Terra Newell Finds Light In The Blackhole Of Sociopathy Apr 01, 2022

    Moving Past Murder Episode #31 - April 1, 2022

Dirty John, the hit podcast from Wondery and The Los Angeles Times, turned into a TV Sensation starring Connie Britton, Juno Temple, Julia Garner, and Eric Bana as the charming, handsome, sociopathic nightmare John Meehan.

But what happened to the real-life characters played by those stars? In today's episode, Collier Landry interviews Terra Newell, daughter of Debra Newell (who married John Meehan), about her experience with the psychotic John. After living in fear that her mother had become entangled with a sketchy character, Terra's fear turned into a nightmare when John Meehan charged Terra with a knife in broad daylight, intending to end her life.

However, fate was on Terra's side as the knife came loose, and she could defend herself against a monster twice her size, ending the madness.

    In today's episode, we discuss...

    • What happens when your life becomes a true crime nightmare?

    • Recognizing coercive control.

    • When self-defense ends another human being's life, how do you move past that?

Sociopath Mashups: Chris Watts VS My Father, Dr. John F. Boyle Mar 25, 2022

Collier breaks down how Chris Watts's behaviors and victim narcissism mirror his father's behavior, both in the courtroom and once in prison.

The Watts family murders occurred in Frederick, CO, in the early morning of August 13, 2018. Christopher Watts admitted to murdering his pregnant wife Shanann by strangulation. He later admitted to murdering their daughters, four-year-old Bella and three-year-old Celeste, by smothering them with a blanket over their heads. On November 6, 2018, Watts pleaded guilty to multiple counts of first-degree murder as part of a plea deal and was sentenced to five life sentences without the possibility of parole.

    Episode highlights:

    • Distorted version of reality - how both men seem to live in a "Walter Mitty" world of their delusion.

    • The Victim Narcissist - Both men want the audience to feel sorry for them for all they have been through, completely ignoring the devastation and destruction they have created.

    • "You Have a Good Idea, let's go with that!" - AKA the "Grabbing at Straws" defense; both men seem to latch on to insane ideas to push the narrative for their defense.

Incest & Sexual Assault (How She Survived) | Nancy Barrows, M.S. CCC-SLP Feb 18, 2022

Disclaimer: This episode contains mature topics and graphic conversations about incest and sexual abuse. Audience discretion is advised.

Named one of LinkedIn's 50 Most Impactful People of 2021, child sexual assault survivor-turned-thriver Nancy Barrows M.S. CCC-SLP is using her personal story to change the narrative on how we look, discuss and treat child sexual abuse, both here in the United States and around the world

    Episode Highlights:

    • Nancy shares her story of being assaulted by her grandfather starting at four. And how her family was forced to confront the abuse after years of "being in the dark".
    • Using her fierce resilience, combined with the love and understanding of her family, Nancy was able to confront her demons of an eating disorder and get off the hamster wheel of guilt and shame that survivors often find impossible to disengage from.
    • Collier shares the similarities between Nancy's trauma and his own dealing with the murder of his mother by his father.
    • Nancy and Collier share a "knowing" moment at which you can recognize trauma in others because you've been through so much.
    • According to the CDC, child sexual abuse is a significant but preventable public health problem. Many children wait to report or never report child sexual abuse. Although estimates vary across studies, the latest data shows:
    • About 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 13 boys experience child sexual abuse at some point in childhood.
    • 91% of child sexual abuse is perpetrated by someone the child or child’s family knows.
    • The total lifetime economic burden of child sexual abuse in the United States in 2015 was estimated to be at least $9.3 billion. However, this is likely an underestimate of the true impact of the problem since child sexual abuse is underreported.
    • The prevalence of child sexual abuse is difficult to determine because it is often not reported; experts agree that the incidence is far greater than what is reported to authorities.

Message to Amir Locke's Mom: “You’re your son’s voice now” Feb 11, 2022

“When you realize that your child is no longer coming home or going to give you a call, that part hits so horribly,”Melissa McKinnies said.

She believes her son Danye Dion Jones was murdered after she found him hanging from a tree by a sheet in her backyard in 2018. An investigation into what happened took place, not by police, but instead through a podcast called After The Uprising, which premiered its first season on iHeart Radio last summer, 2021.

In this episode, she, Collier, and co-host of After The Uprising Ray Nowosielski discusses the outcome of the investigation, no-knock warrants, the devastating death of Amir Locke on February 2 in Minneapolis, and what moving past murder is like.

Collier and Ray also discuss how the show’s recent NAACP award nomination may help elevate national awareness of the crime and open new doors to the investigation.

Collier fights back tears while talking to Melissa about her grief over her son's death and the lack of investigators' accountability in finding who killed her son.

Robert Durst is permanently JINXED! ☠️ Will the murderer’s death keep his victims from finding closure?. Jan 14, 2022

Disgraced multimillionaire and real estate heir Robert Durst is dead.

    • How the murderer’s death may keep his victims from finding closure. As someone who confronted my father over the murder of my mother, I have my unique take on this conundrum.

    • I also discuss the similarities between Durst's bizarre behavior and my father's. In my opinion, they are both sociopaths.

    • Authorities believe Durst was behind three killings in three states over four decades, as highlighted in the 2015 HBO documentary series The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst.

    • As a filmmaker, I also look at the impact HBO's series had on the conviction of Robert Durst in the trial over the murder of Susan Berman.

Power VS Authority: Former Detroit PD Officer turned attorney and author David Robinson, Esq. on the Police & America. Jul 30, 2021

Collier and Brenda welcome attorney and author David Robinson, Esq. to the program to share his thoughts on the current state of policing in the United States. With over 30 years of experience in law enforcement and on both sides of the infamous "Blue Line," David's unique perspective elevates the current debate of Power VS Authority and how much is too much.

We explore how the curing of "the symptoms" does not cure "the disease", but rather further escalates the current crash course between the civilian population and those in uniform trying to keep the streets safe.

Collier notes how the current situation seems to go far beyond race and/or gender but rather comes down to one simple scenario: those who seek to maintain power versus those who seek to attain it.

My Story Part Two...the next day.. (re-broadcast) May 31, 2021

The morning after my 11-year-old self was jolted from my sleep on December 31, 1989, to the sound of a scream followed by two loud thuds, I came downstairs to confront my father.

When I demanded my father answer a simple question, "WHERE IS MY MOTHER!?" he nonchalantly said, "Mommy took a little vacation Collier."

The rest, as we say, is history...

Collier Landry and Brenda Fisher discuss the details of how his father's trial and eventual conviction unfold, along with Collier's ordeal with the foster care system after both sides of his family abandon him.

Diary of a Psychopath: Collier's father romanticizes falling in love with his mother. After he murdered her. May 07, 2021

Collier Landry and Brenda Fisher discuss as Collier reads his father's letter from prison in which he romanticizes how he met and fell in love with Collier's mother.

The letter concludes with his father blaming the "Mansfield Crooks" for destroying his life and for his incarceration, yet he never admits his own role in the murder of Collier's mother, which he was convicted for on June 24, 1990.

Collier shares his own story of how the probate lawyers in the case took advantage of a young and helpless Collier financially.

The episode concludes with Collier explaining all of his father's manipulation tactics, which are fully on display in this correspondence.

Another Murder in Mansfield? Todd Blevins' wife Rebecca E. Harris Blevins arrested for his murder in Lexington, Ohio on April 27th Apr 30, 2021

    Todd Blevins...another murder in Mansfield?

Collier and Brenda discuss the April 27th arrest of Rebecca E. Harris Blevins for the murder of her husband Todd Blevins in Lexington, Ohio, a suburb of Collier's hometown of Mansfield.

As some pointed out on Social Media, the details of the case share similarities with the murder of Collier's own mother by his father, Dr. John F. Boyle, Jr. Those include the body of Mr. Blevins being buried in the basement of his home and the accused being charged with "abuse of a corpse".

Concerning to both Collier and Brenda are the children, who are most certain to be without both of their parents for the better part of their lives.

My Stalker: Collier's stalker re-emerges with a disturbing email after she contacts his father in prison! Apr 16, 2021

Having been blocked years ago, and clearly seeking to reach new personal lows, Collier shares a disturbing email from my stalker after she contacted my father in prison via the Jpay email app for contacting incarcerated prisoners.

In this episode, Collier shares the backstory of how he came to know this woman. He reads a recent email she has shared between her and my sociopathic father, who he witnessed murder his mother when I was 11 years old.

Collier and co-host Brenda ponder what the hidden agenda is behind her attempt at reaching new lows. Is it to get Collier's attention? Why is she playing this sick and twisted game?!

Even more disturbing, the email reveals Collier's father's true anger toward him for not advocating for his release on parole in December 2020.

Sins of the Father, Part 1: The damage caused by Collier's father's violence on his mother's family comes full circle. Apr 09, 2021

Collier shares with Brenda how his mother, Noreen's cousin, recently reached out after seeing his documentary "A Murder in Mansfield." When Collier seeks to learn more about his mother's childhood from her family, he is shut down simply for being "his father's son."

Collier remembers how he was shut down many years ago by both his mother AND father's family, who labeled him "guilty by association," despite Collier's crusade in aiding the investigation of his mother's murder, leading to his father's conviction for her murder.

Collier reveals how this stigma has haunted him his entire life and seeks to understand if other "children of murderers" face the same hurdles in life.

Fugitive on the Run in Los Angeles! Dave Messmore, retired Captain of the Mansfield Police Dept. Mar 31, 2021

Collier Landry and Brenda Fisher discuss with special guest retired police Captain Dave Messmore, Mansfield Police Department, the manhunt currently underway for fugitive Lester Eubanks in Los Angeles, CA. Eubanks has been on the run after confessing and being incarcerated for the brutal rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl in Mansfield, Ohio, almost 50 years ago.

Eubanks, lauded as a model prisoner by the Ohio Dept. of Corrections, escaped after being granted leave to go Christmas shopping in December 1973 and hasn't been seen since. Dave Messmore sought the involvement of America's Most Wanted and John Walsh, which re-aired the episode on March 22, 2021, and brought multiple tips leading US Marshalls to Los Angeles, CA.

-Collier and Dave also discuss the murder of Collier's mother, Noreen, in which Dave served as the lead detective on the case and was the ONLY ONE who believed 11-year-old Collier that his mother was murdered by his father, Dr. John F. Boyle, Jr.

-Collier and Dave share a heart-to-heart about the murder of Melinda Kay Davis in Shelby, Ohio, who was laid to rest on March 26, 2021.

Local Ohio Tragedy: Melinda Davis' murder resonates with Collier's own mother's murder. Mar 25, 2021

Collier Landry and Brenda Fisher discuss the tragic discovery of the body of Melinda Kay Davis, mother of four, on March 14, 2021, in Galloway, Ohio. Davis' ex-boyfriend, John Henry Mack, Jr., had been charged with kidnapping before the discovery. United States Marshals said Mack boasted at one point to investigators that Davis' "body would never be found," which helped connect him to his ex-girlfriend's disappearance.

The case presented a familiar tone, as Ms. Davis had reportedly said to friends that if she disappeared, Mack might be responsible. Collier's mother told him that if she was to disappear, his father had something to do with it. 2 months later, her body was found, and Collier's father was arrested for her murder.

***Collier also discusses the distance the murder of his mother has put between himself and his family, especially his half-sister Krissy, who recently got remarried.

Collier's Story, Pt. 3: What it's like to be a child witness at your father's murder trial. Mar 16, 2021

Collier Landry and Brenda Fisher discuss the days around his father's murder trial. After his father, Dr. John F. Boyle, Jr., was arrested, Collier was thrown into the foster care system, where he would stay until non-family members adopted him.

Given the gravity of the situation surrounding the murder of his mother by his father, immediate family members found themselves paralyzed by their trauma and unable to come forward to try and help Collier and his sister.

Given the nature of Collier's witness status, all of the adults in his life tried to shield him from watching TV, reading newspapers, etc. Collier discusses community members who were conflicted and couldn't believe that their doctor could commit such a horrific act of violence.

Moving Past Murder Trailer Jan 01, 2021

While most hosts of true crime podcasts simply discuss murders that fascinate them, I have actually lived through one.

On New Year's Eve 1989, I awoke in the middle of the night to the sound of two loud thuds. The next morning, when my mother was missing, I knew she was no longer alive. No one believed me except one detective, and covertly, I began gathering evidence against my father. Twenty-five days later, police discovered my mother's body buried beneath the home my father purchased with his mistress.

I had witnessed a murder, and at the age of twelve, I testified against my father at his month-long murder trial.

He is still incarcerated to this day.

Every week, I share my unique perspective on surviving true crime, overcoming trauma, and moving on. It is my hope that this podcast serves as a kind of therapy and reconciliation for myself, and anyone who may be processing betrayal and dark trauma in their lives.

I'm Collier Landry, and this is Moving Past Murder.
