The Undifferentiated Medical Student – Ian DrummondListen
The Undifferentiated Medical Student (TUMS) podcast is about helping medical students to choose a medical specialty and plan a career in medicine. The list of career options available to medical students is large, but the time to explore them all is short. Moreover, mentorship in medical school is lacking, and many medical students tackle the task of career planning alone, most struggling and almost all clutching to the hope that 3rd year clinical rotations will definitively resolve their remaining uncertainties about how they want to specialize. However, having been distracted by the relentless pace of their pre-clinical curricula and specter of Step 1, 3rd year medical students are eventually confronted with the reality that there are simply too many specialties to explore in one year and that they may not even get to finish their clinical rotations before important decisions about their careers need to be made (e.g., the planning of acting internships) if they are to be competitive applicants. Thus, mentorless and clinically unexposed, many medical students are forced to make wholly uninformed decisions about their futures. By interviewing at least one physician from each of the 120+ specialties listed on the AAMC’s Careers in Medicine website 1) about their specialty, 2) how they decided this specialty was right for them, and 3) for advice about long-term career planning irrespective of the specialty they went into, this podcast aims to enumerate the details of every specialty and provide virtual mentorship on how best to go about moving past being an undifferentiated medical student.

Throughout the year, look for special “Study Smarter” series. In the Spring it’s USMLE Step 1 and COMLEX Level 1. Early Summer it’s Step 2. In the late fall, we’ll help you Match Smarter in your chosen specialty. But we also will pepper in shows dedicated to particular shelf exams, Step 3, and other topics relevant to those involved in medical education.
New episodes every one to two weeks featuring interviews with leaders in the exam preparation space from companies like Picmonic, Memorang, USMLE-Rx, Osmosis, Firecracker, MedSchoolCoach, Sketchymedical and more. Our guests are people like Kevin Pho, Conrad Fischer, Pamela Wible, and Edward Goljan (okay, maybe we haven’t had Goljan on yet, but hey, we’d like to).
We give pride of place to multiple choice question “dissections” so you can succeed on the USMLE, COMLEX, shelf exams, and in med school.
Most episodes feature a contest where you can win access to a high yield and relevant study resource by listening and leaving a review of the show on iTunes or applicable podcast service and sending a screenshot to email@example.com
Our show is especially for medical students, residents, and doctors, but nursing students, physician assistant students, and others in the health professions will also find it helpful. Really, we’re for anyone who wants to learn to how to get the most from their study by focusing not just on the content (the “what”) of an exam but also the process (the “how”) of taking it.
Whether it’s an NBME or NBOME shelf exam, USMLE, COMLEX, NCLEX, PANCE, or any other test you’ll face in medicine, we want to help you succeed. Step 1 is no match for an ITB listener 🙂
Share us with your friends and on social media. And check out our website https://www.insidetheboards.com for more info and let us help you get inside the boards!
