Where Does ‘Timesuck’ Come From?

What is Timesuck!?!  Timesuck is a meeting of the endlessly inquisitive! It’s a comedically irreverent exploration of the world we live in. It’s one man, host Dan Cummins – that’s me –  described by splitsider.com [1] as a “one-man history wrecking crew, who will, even after the dust settles, leave you with some facts and tales that will make you look halfway smart at a lot of cocktail parties and bar hangouts.”

As Dan says,

Timesuck is a community of the curious that grew from just a few thousand weekly listeners to well over 100,000 in just a few months. Each week on Timesuck, I take a listener-suggested topic – well over a thousand topics have been sent into the show so far – and I do my best to provide much more than just a wikipedia rundown so they can start their week with a wealth of new entertaining information they’re bound to share. I’ve also had fun learning something new, and with Timesuck, I do my best every week to make learning fun for everyone else. So start off your week – new episodes drop every Monday – with some Timesuck today! And then keep on suckin’

The Interview

Who has had the biggest influence on your podcasting career and why?

Tom Vann from A Mediocre Time with Tom and Dan. He’s been incredibly generous with his time and really pushed me to launch the podcast on my own. Originally, Timesuck was supposed to be on a podcast network that I won’t name here, and once they heard the first episode they decided they no longer wanted to do it. They didn’t think it was a marketable idea. I was pretty discouraged, but Tom – who I’d met in Orlando years earlier when I appeared on his podcast to promote some standup shows at the Improv – he told me to just do the whole thing myself. He and Daniel Dennis told me what equipment to use, they promoted the Hell out of TImesuck to spread it to their fanbase, and put in me touch with the team they use for all of their merchandise (a team I still use). And, they’ve helped in so many other ways. And, most importantly, they’ve showed me you can have a lot of fun and make a great living as a podcaster. So inspiring! Without them, Timesuck would not exist. Also, as a sidenote, Timesuck has grown much faster and seems to have a much bigger fanbase than any of the other shows on the network that dropped me. Ha!

If there’s someone, past or present, that you’d love to have an opportunity to go to dinner with, who would that be and why?

Hmm. Honestly, probably Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam. I love how he’s handled his career. I love his political stances, social activism work, kick ass music, sense of humor, and relationship with his fans. And I love that, like me, he lives in the Pacific Northwest. I’d love to get drunk with that guy and stay up talking about anything and everything until 4 in

the morning.

What is it, about your audience, that continues to surprise you?

How nice they are! Holy shit they are supportive. They’re so involved and they’re really helped shape the show. I get easily over 100 messages a week from them, if not 200. I’ve met numerous Timesuckers at stand up shows and they are just the best people. Consistently. They send me emails with either praise or constructive criticism. They offer their help – my logo was designed by a fan, I have research assistants who are fans, business consultants who are fans, some software developer fans building a Timesuck app, someone running social media now who is a fan, fans are creating new music to use on the show, a fan recently set up a Timesuck trivia night at the brewery, and on and on and on. Nearly 600 iTunes reviews have been written so far, and I think only one was slightly negative, and even then the reviewer still said I was hilarious. He just didn’t like my religious stance. Fair enough! In the troll web culture we live in – I’m amazed that out of well over 100,000 listeners – not one has torn apart the the show (so far!).

In one word, how would your best friends describe you? Why do you think that is?

Wow. That’s a tough one. Hopefully, it’s “nice”. Supposedly, I have a pretty good reputation for just being a nice guy, which surprises some people because of how dark and angry my comedy can be. Who knows though, maybe it’s really “asshole”, but no one is telling me!

If you had one day, completely free, away from work, no watch on, and could do whatever the hell you wanted, what would it be and why?

I’d go fishing. Somewhere where I don’t get cell phone reception, where there are no other people, and where the trout are big and biting. Only the sounds of rushing water, a breeze rustling through the trees, birds, and me reeling in some fat fish. That sounds like heaven.

Any advertisers you want to give a shout out to? Or anyone you’d like to thank?

I’d like to thank Jimmie Whisman from Crime in Sports and Small Town Murder for being another dude who has supported my podcast from the very beginning. And also comic Scott Long who has done the same! I’s also like to thank the Timesuck fans for being the best fucking people on Earth and redeeming my faith in humanity – love you Timesuckers! And also Dollar Shave Club and Mack Weldon for putting out kick ass products and continuing to support the show. And also Audible – sponsor some more shows you guys! I listen to audiobooks every episode anyway – we’re a match made in Heaven! And thank you for naming me a podfluencer!
